Box Score
The University of Texas-Pan American baseball team was held scoreless in nine innings against the 23rd-ranked University of Texas on Tuesday (Feb. 12) when they suffered a 19-0 setback in Round Rock, TX, at The Dell Diamond.
The Broncs dropped to 4-4 on the season while the Longhorns improved to 4-4 with the victory.
After one scoreless inning on both sides, Texas went to work, scoring three runs in the second inning when Longhorn lead-off man Chance Wheeless covered the bases on three straight fielding errors by the Broncs before Fuller and Peoples recorded RBI to make it a 3-0 ballgame after two innings of play.
The Longhorns added to their run total in the fourth frame when Alex Guajardo (La Joya, TX/La Joya H.S.) took the mound in place of Josh Wymer (Fort Worth, TX/Foster Ridge H.S.), allowing a double from the first batter he faced who later scored on a sacrifice fly to left field to put the `Horns up 4-0.
UTPA couldn't answer the call defensively in the fifth or sixth inning as they allowed UT to score two runs in each of the innings to make the score 8-0 going into the seventh stanza.
The Longhorns must have re-energized during the seventh inning stretch as they more than doubled their run total of eight by scoring 11 runs in the eighth frame. The Broncs used five different pitchers during the inning, and struggled to get the third out with Texas scoring six of the 11 runs with two outs on the board.
Despite notching eight hits, including multiple hit performances from three different players, the Broncs couldn't put together a string of hits to get on the board against Texas.
Seniors Patrick Brooks (Vallejo, CA/Santa Rosa J.C.) and Osiel Flores (Mission, TX/UT-Brownsville) each had two hits on the day while Flores was the only UTPA batter to record a multiple base hit when he recorded a double down the leftfield line in the top of the fifth.
The Longhorns had no problem with the Bronc pitching staff as they put up 17 hits, including 11 doubles and 17 RBI against seven different UTPA hurlers.
Reigning Independent Pitcher of the Week Wymer (2-1) gets tagged with the loss and saw the most action on the mound for the Broncs as he pitched three inning, allowing three runs on three hits while striking out one of 16 batters he faced.
Earning the win for the `Horns was Austin Wood who pitched five innings, allowing just four hits while fanning five of the 23 Bronc batters he squared off against. Harris Hunter got the save for closing out the final two inning of play, giving up just one hit against seven batters.
The Broncs return to action on Friday (Feb. 16) at 6:30 p.m. when they head to College Station, TX, to take on another Big 12 foe in Texas A&M University with a trio of games scheduled for the weekend.
