Box Score
In game one of a three-game series, The University of Texas-Pan American baseball team was held without a hit in six innings of play on Friday (Feb. 23) when it dropped a 2-0 road decision to Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, TX.
It was an old-fashioned pitchers duel when Josh Wymer (Fort Worth, TX/Foster Ridge H.S.) and Jacob Howard took to the mound for the Broncs and Bearkats, respectively. Wymer (2-3) was tagged with the loss despite pitching 8.0 innings for the Broncs, allowing five hits while striking out five of the 35 batters faced tonight.
Howard earned the victory for the Bearkats, pitching 7.0 innings and striking out seven Bronc batters while only walking one and giving up just one hit. SHSU teammate Luke Prihoda picked up his third save of the season when he closed out the final two innings of play, fanning four of the final UTPA batters while allowing just two hits.
The Broncs most successful outing came in the top of the eighth frame when Abraham Garcia (McAllen, TX/McAllen Memorial H.S.) and Matt Guzman (Corpus Christi, TX/UT-San Antonio) led off the inning with singles before advancing to third and second base, respectively, on a sacrifice bunt from Lyndon Bartosh (Bay City, TX/Navarro J.C.). A Blake Whittlesey (Marble Falls, TX/UT-Brownsville) strike out and and a ground out by Roly Gonzalez (Miami, FL/UNC-Greensboro) ended the inning before the Broncs could score any runs.
The most important inning in the game from the Sam Houston bench in the bottom of the third stanza when the Bearkat batters picked up two runs and three hits. The highlight of the inning was an RBI triple from designated hitter Karl Krailo that scored the winning run before crossing the plate himself on a single to right field.
The Broncs are back in action on Saturday (Feb. 24) when they face the Bearkats in game one of a doubleheader with the first pitch scheduled for at 2:00 p.m. in Huntsville, TX.
