The University of Texas-Pan American women's tennis team improved to 4-7 on the season when they earned a victory over Nicholls State University on Saturday (Feb. 24) at the Orville Cox Tennis Center by a 4-3 count.

The Lady Broncs picked up the doubles' point when the duo of Stephanie Willerding (Toronto, Ontario, Canada/Northview Heights S.S.) and Luisa Cantu rallied back from being down 6-4 to win the match by a 9-7 margin against Adenline Vallet and Sara Hanesch to clinch the point for UTPA.

In other doubles' action, the tandem of Megan Bedeau (Scarborough, Ontario, Canada/Northview Heights S.S.) and Silke Buksik (Waiblingen, Germany/Salier-Gymnasium Waiblingen) set the tone for the afternoon when they started the day off by handing Sanja Stanojcic and Nichole September a setback by a count of 8-1.

In top-flight doubles' play, the Colonel's Celine Stenger and Karlijn Sissingh defeated the UTPA pairing of Giana Oliveira (Santa Anna, Brazil/Eckerd College) and Julia Cirne-Lima (Porto Alegre, Brazil/Eckerd College) by a score of 8-1.

"The doubles' point was big for us today. I thought we struggled in the one and two spots, but Stephanie and Luisa came up big for us," said head men's and women's tennis coach Rob Hubbard.

In single's action, Oliveira fell to Stenger (6-3, 6-2) in the number-one spot on the lineup while teammate Cirne-Lima was victorious over Hanesch (6-1, 6-2).

The teams swapped wins again when Willerding dropped her tightly-contested match-up with Vallet (7-5, 6-4) before Bedeau answered the call by picking up a victory over Stanojcic (6-3, 6-3). Another hard-fought match-up came when Sissingh out-lasted Buksik (7-6, 6-3) in a contest that had a tie-breaker reach 13-11 before Nicholls State picked up with point.

The game-winner came from an unlikely source as freshman Cantu gutted out a match that clinched the victory for the Lady Broncs in her first time in a UTPA uniform. Cantu earned the victory over September by a count of 6-0, 7-6 (8-6), 6-2.

"I think we had an overall good performance today. It shows we are getting match-tough, and hopefully we can keep the streak going against Prairie View A&M," said Hubbard.

The Lady Bronc take to the court again when they face Prairie View A&M at the Orville Cox Tennis Center on the campus of UTPA with match-time set for 11:00 a.m.
