Bearkats Complete Sweep of Broncs with 18-2 Victory

Sam Houston State pounded out 21 hits in the fourth and final game of the series en route to securing an 18-2 victory over the UTPA diamondmen at Don Sanders Stadium in Huntsville, TX, on Sunday (Feb. 25).

With holding a tight 3-1 lead over the Broncs, Sam Houston State exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to up the advantage to 10-1 on the scoreboard. The Bearkats finished strong in the game as they scored two runs in the seventh inning followed by a six-run spot in the eighth frame.

Keith Stein collected four hits, including a double, to go along two runs scored and a pair of RBI for the Bearkats while Bobby Verbick collected three hits while driving in a pair of runs and plating two runs.

Sam Houston State connected on three home runs in the game coming off of the bats of Todd Sebek, Heath Pugh and Austin Boggs as the Bearkat trio all delivered the hits with runners of base.

The Broncs finished the game with 11 hits in the contest as four UTPA hitters connected on at two hits in the contest. Dominic Tognietti (Katy, TX/James E. Taylor H.S.) collected his second straight multi-hit performance as the UTPA freshman also delivered in a RBI for the Broncs.

Osiel Flores (Mission, TX/UT-Brownsville), Matt Guzman (Corpus Christi, TX/UTSA) and Abraham Garcia (McAllen, TX/McAllen Memorial H.S.) each added a pair of hits for the Valley's squad in the contest.

Bryce Smolen (Houston, TX/Lamar H.S.) dropped his first decision of the season as the UTPA newcomer hurled 4.1 innings of action, surrendering seven runs - all earned - on nine hits.

Zac Baker evened his record for the Bearkats to 1-1 as he tossed 5.0 innings allowing one run on seven hits while striking out five Bronc hitters.

With the setback, the Broncs dropped their overall record to 5-11 while Sam Houston State improved to 8-4 during the 2007 campaign.

The Broncs will be back in action in the Rio Grande Valley for the Fifth Annual Al Ogletree Classic held at the Edinburg Baseball Stadium beginning on Friday (Mar. 2).
