The University of Texas-Pan American women's tennis program recorded one of its biggest weekends in recent memory as the Lady Broncs posted a 2-1 record, including an upset of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
The Lady Broncs posted a 4-2 victory over the Islanders on Saturday (Feb. 3) afternoon, which included tough, down-to-the-line matches in every position.
Giana Oliveira (Santa Anna, Brazil/Eckerd College) and Julia Cirne-Lima (Porto Alegre, Brazil/Eckerd College) posted an 8-5 victory over Carmen Abeazueru and Erika Iriarte in the number-one doubles' position.
Megan Bedeau (Scarborough, Ontario, Canada/Northview Heights S.S.) and Silke Buksik (Waiblingen, Germany/Salier-Gymnasium Waiblingen) captured a 9-7 victory in the number-three doubles' position over Amanda Brahim and Alexandra Valarezo to score the point in doubles action.
In singles' action, Cirne-Lima collected a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Abeazueru in the number-two position while Stephanie Willerding (Toronto, Ontario, Canada/Northview Heights S.S.) posted a 6-3 and 6-2 decision over Nina Ciric in the number-four position. Buksik collected a 6-1, 6-1 decision over Valarezo in the number-five position.
"This was a big win for us," said head men's and women's tennis coach Rob Hubbard. "This is probably the biggest win in quite some time for the women's tennis program, and it's especially nice to defeat a Southland Conference opponent. Last year, we lost to them by a 7-0 score, and to turn around in one year and defeat them is quite an accomplishment for our team."
The Lady Broncs were able to kick-off the weekend in grand fashion as UTPA defeated McMurry by a 7-0 blanking to record their first victory of the season.
In the contest, Cirne-Lima and Oliveira posted an 8-0 decision over Kristen Bray and Amy Torti in the number-one doubles' position while Bedeau and Buksik captured an 8-0 victory over Amy Hathorn and Veronica Quinoz in the number-two position.
Nicole Garcia (Cibolo, TX/Lee College) and Sarah Burton (Oakville, Ontario, Canada/Oakville Trafalgar H.S.) collected their first victory as a doubles' combination with an 8-2 victory over Jamie Doby and Kim Patterson in the third position of doubles' action.
In singles' action, Cirne-Lima captured a 6-0, 6-1 decision over Bray while Willerding collected a 6-1, 6-4 decision over Torti in the second position of singles' action.
Bedeau earned a 6-0 and 6-2 decision over Quinoz in the third position while Buksik collected a 6-0, 6-1 decision over Hathorn in the number-four spot. Garcia earned the 6-1, 6-1 triumph over Doby while Burton collected a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Patterson in the sixth position of singles' action.
The Lady Broncs suffered their only setback of the three-match weekend with a 6-1 defeat to Abilene Christian, one of the top-ranked Division II programs in the country.
Bedeau and Buksik were the only doubles' combination to post a victory as they captured an 8-6 victory in the number-three doubles' position.
Bedeau was also a two-time winner on the day as she was the lone Lady Broncs to collect a singles' victory with a 6-2, 6-4 triumph in the number-four position.
"Overall the weekend was a good performance, but we were able to get two out of three matches. We lost a number of close matches against Abilene Christian, but we made significant strides in our performances, and I really believe that this weekend will help us turn the corner for a successful campaign," added Hubbard.
The Lady Broncs will be back in action on Friday (Feb. 9) when they square-off against Southland Conference-opponent Texas State in San Marcos, TX.
