Box Score

University of Oklahoma 6, UTPA 5
UTPA came back two times in game one of a doubleheader against the University of Oklahoma, but couldn't make it a third as the Sooners got the victory on a ninth inning run to win by a score of 6-5 on Sunday (Feb. 4) at the Edinburg Baseball Stadium.

The Sooners opened up the scoring in the top of the second inning when Joseph Newman reached first base on a walk before advancing to second on an error. A Jackson Williams double to left field drove in Newman to make the score 1-0.

The following inning didn't fair to well for the Broncs as Jeremy Johnson (League City, TX/Alvin Junior College) gave up a three-run homer to Aaron Baker to make the score 4-0 coming out of the top of the third frame.

The Broncs answered with a pair of runs of their own in the bottom of the third inning when OU pitcher Joseph Hughes gave up two runs and one hit to the Bronc batters. Matt Guzman (Corpus Christi, TX/UT-San Antonio) sparked the action when he reached first base after being hit by a pitch and reaching second on an Abraham Garcia (McAllen, TX/McAllen Memorial H.S.) ground out.

A Nick Bourn (San Antonio, TX/Warren High School) single resulted in a throwing error, scoring Guzman while Bourn advanced to second base. The Bronc's finished the inning with Bourn crossing home plate on a Dominic Tognietti (Katy, TX/James E. Taylor H.S.) single to make the score 4-2.

UTPA tied the game in the sixth stanza when Sooners gave up two runs on four errors. Tognietti reached first base on a throwing error by Bryant Hernandez before advancing to second on a throwing error by the pitcher. Patrick Brooks (Vallejo, CA/Santa Rosa J.C.) reached first base on an error before Johnson took a pitch to the body to fill the bases.

Brooks and Tognietti came around to score following an error by the OU third baseman on the at-bat by Guzman to make the score 4-4 going into the seventh inning.

A Jarod Freeman double to left center caused a pitching change as Steven Davila (Weslaco, TX/Weslaco High School) entered the game for UTPA. Williams drove in Freeman who reached third base on a ground out by Shepherd.

The Broncs answered with small ball of their own when Brooks sparked the action once again after being walked and moved to second courtesy of a Leighton Autry (Stephenville, TX/Navarro J.C.) sacrifice bunt down the first base line. Blake Whittlesey (Marble Falls, TX/UT-Brownsville) drove Brook in for the tying RBI on a single to the short stop.

In the ninth inning the Sooner's Aaron Ivey scored the winning run after making it to third base on a Davis sacrifice bunt and a Dunigan single.
