Box Score

The University of Texas-Pan American diamondmen suffered a 20-4 setback in the series finale with the 21st-ranked University of Oklahoma Sooners in Norman, OK, on Wednesday (Mar. 14).

The Sooners jumped on the Broncs quickly in the first inning as the home squad posted eight runs in the initial frame. In that frame, Aaron Reza connected on a two-run triple while Joseph Hughes added a two-run doubles for the nationally-ranked home squad.

The Broncs were able to get on the scoreboard in the top of the third inning when Nick Bourn (San Antonio, TX/Warren H.S.) singled up the middle allowing Matt Guzman (Corpus Christi, TX/UTSA) to touch home plate from second base.

The Sooner offense proved to be relentless on the Wednesday afternoon game as Oklahoma scored at least one run in seven of eight innings, including its final six at-bats at Dale Mitchell Park.

The Broncs found themselves down by a 19-1 count in the top of the eighth inning when UTPA had their biggest inning of the game by spotting three runs in that frame. Blake Whittlesey (Mission, TX/UT-Brownsville) connected on a two-run single to left field that allowed Patrick Brooks (Vallejo, CA/Santa Rosa J.C.) and Nick Spears (Austin, TX/Bowie H.S.) to score on the play.

However - that would be all the offense that the Sooners would allow the Broncs to put together en route to the victory.

The Broncs fell to 9-18 on the season while the Sooners improved to 15-5, including a perfect 11-0 on their home field.

The Sooners had seven hitters connect on at least two hits in the game en route to finishing with a season-high 24 for the Big XII Conference-program. Joe Dunigan connected on three hits and four RBI while Reza finished with three hits, three RBI and three runs scored.

Jimmy Rollins recorded his first victory of the season for the Sooners as the OU junior tossed 3.0 innings allowing one run on one hit for the victors.

Alex Guajardo (La Joya, TX/La Joya H.S.) suffered the loss for the Broncs as the UTPA senior failed to record an out in the first inning while surrendering five runs - four earned - on four hits. The UTPA senior dropped his record to 1-3 on the 2007 campaign.

Bourn led the Broncs with a pair of hits while Whittlesey drove in a pair of runs for the Broncs.

UTPA will be back in action this weekend at the Edinburg Baseball Stadium when the Broncs welcome Northern Colorado to the Rio Grande Valley for a three-game set. First pitch will be on Friday (Mar. 16) at 6:00 p.m.
