March 20, 2007

Box Score

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi used five pitchers to limit the UTPA offense to five hits as the Islanders rolled to a 4-1 victory over the Broncs on Tuesday (Mar. 20) at Chapman Field in Corpus Christi, TX.

The Broncs fell to 11-20 on the season while the Islanders snapped a five-game losing streak and improved their overall record to 14-11 on the 2007 campaign.

UTPA took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning when Jeremy Johnson (League City, TX/Alvin J.C.) scored from third base off of a sacrifice fly by Bronc catcher Osiel Flores (Mission, TX/UT-Brownsville). That would be the last time that the Broncs would plate a run in the contest as the Islanders only allowed three hits over the final eight innings of action.

The Islanders got on the scoreboard in a big way in the fifth inning as two Texas A&M-Corpus Christi hitters connect on solo home runs in the frame. Chase Williams opened up the inning with a home to leftfield while Martin Parra connected on another solo home over the left-centerfield fence.

The Islanders added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom half of the sixth inning with the long ball coming into effect for Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. This time it was David Williams who delivered the power as the Islander senior connected on a two-run home run, allowing Chris Widner to score in the process.

James Burdine picked up his first victory of the season as the Islander right-hander tossed 3.0 innings of action allowing only two hits while striking out four hitters. Trey Maldonado recorded his third save of the season as he tossed 1.1 innings, giving up no runs and no hits while striking out one hitter.

Matt Shepherd (Austin, TX/Howard J.C.) suffered the loss for the Broncs and dropped his record to 0-2 on the season as the UTPA junior allowed three runs - both earned - over 5.0 innings of action. He gave up eight hits and two walks while striking out three hitters.

Patrick Brooks (Vallejo, CA/Santa Rosa J.C.) led the UTPA offense against the Islanders as the Bronc senior posted three of the team's five hits in the game. Abraham Garcia (McAllen, TX/McAllen Memorial H.S.) and Dominic Tognietti (Katy, TX/James E. Taylor H.S.) each posted a single hit for the Valley's program.

UTPA will be back in action on Tuesday (Mar. 27) when the Broncs welcome University of Texas at San Antonio to the Edinburg Baseball Stadium. First pitch is set for 5:00 p.m.
