Shepherd's Gem Leads UTPA In 4-0 Win

The University of Texas-Pan American baseball team rode the arm of Matt Shepherd (Austin, TX/Howard J.C.) to a 4-0 victory over North Dakota State University on Saturday (Mar. 31) at the Edinburg Baseball Stadium.

The Broncs recorded eight hits in the contest, improving to 12-22 on the season while the Bison dropped to 3-14.

Leighton Autrey (Stephenville, TX/Navarro J.C.) put an end to a scoreless game in the bottom of the fifth inning when the senior center fielder hit his first home run of the season to put the Broncs up by a score of 1-0.

The Broncs added three runs in the sixth inning on a four hit, one error frame to go up by a 4-0 count. Catcher Osiel Flores (Mission, TX/UT-Brownsville) hit an RBI double to right field, driving in Abraham Garcia (McAllen, TX/McAllen Memorial H.S.). Roly Gonzalez (Miami, FL/UNC-Greensboro) sent Flores home on a sacrifice fly before Matt Guzman (Corpus Christi, TX/UT-San Antonio) drove in the third run of the inning on an RBI single to left center.

Shepherd improved to 1-2 on the season, pitching a two-hit complete game in which he fanned six Bison batters. The UTPA newcomer was aided offensively by lead-off hitter Garcia who went 2-for-5 while scoring one run.

NDSU's starting pitcher Jeff Hille gets the loss, allowing four runs in six innings on the mound.

The Broncs are back in action on Sunday (Apr. 1) when they play the final game of a three-game series against the Bison with game time slated to begin at noon.
