The UTPA men's tennis team returned to its winning ways as the Broncs posted a 5-2 victory over Prairie View A&M on Sunday (Mar. 4) at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
With the victory, the Broncs improved their overall record to 4-9 during the 2007 spring campaign.
"It was a tough weekend for the men having to play four matches in three days," said head men's and women's tennis coach Rob Hubbard. "They competed well for the most part with the nationally-ranked teams as part of the H.E.B. Invitational. We were able to come home and defeat Prairie View A&M convincingly, which is a sign of how tough the men are becoming."
The match began in doubles' action where the Broncs posted a clean sweep of the Panthers with David Lopez-Heredia and Brett Bernstein (Sugar Land, TX/Austin H.S.) recording an 8-3 victory over Andy Narido and Kudzai Chiridza in the number-one position.
Ivan Avila (Mexico City, Mexico/Texas Southern Univ.) and Nirvick Mohinta (Calcutta, West Bengal, India/Univ. of New Orleans) posted an 8-2 victory over John Koti and Nicolas Bateman in the number-two position while Gary Bianco (Annecy, France/Lycee Berthollet) and Shashank Vij (Helsinki, Finland/Univ. of New Orleans) claimed an 8-3 triumph in the third flight over Jeremy Hubb and Jason Hubb.
In singles' action, Avila posted a 7-5, 6-3 decision over Narido in the top flight while Bianco handed Chiridza a straight-set setback by scores of 6-3 and 6-1 in the number-three spot in the lineup.
Bernstein continued his strong play as the UTPA freshman recorded a 6-3, 6-4 decision over Jason Hubb in the number-five position while Mohinta defeated Chris Scurry by scores of 6-0, 6-0 in the number-six position.
The Panthers received their only two points of the day as Bateman handed Lopez-Heredia in a 6-3, 6-2 setback in the number-two position while Koti dropped Vij by scores of 6-4 and 7-5 in the number-four spot of the lineup.
The Broncs will be back in action on Wednesday (Mar. 7) when UTPA travels to San Antonio, TX, to square-off against Big East Conference-opponent University of Connecticut.
