Broncs Increase Win Streak to Three Games with Triumph over PVAMU

The University of Texas-Pan American baseball program posted its third straight victory with a 10-4 triumph over Prairie View A&M at Panther Stadium in Prairie View, TX, on Wednesday (Mar. 7).

The Broncs opened up the game with a pair of runs in the top of the first inning after Patrick Brooks (Vallejo, CA/Santa Rosa J.C.) connected on a double that drove home both Osiel Flores (Mission, TX/Univ. of Texas-Brownsville) and Dominic Tognietti (Katy, TX/James E. Taylor H.S.). Flores reached base himself with a double while Tognietti earned a walk in his at-bat.

Prairie View A&M came back in the bottom half of the first inning to tie the game at 2-2 on the scoreboard after Arthur Christal connected on a two-run home run off of UTPA starter Alex Guajardo (La Joya, TX/La Joya H.S.).

UTPA rebounded in the top half of the second inning as Roly Gonzalez (Miami, FL/UNC-Greensboro) grounded out to second base allowing Matt Guzman (Corpus Christi, TX/UTSA) to score from third base. The Broncs added a second run in that frame when Jonathon Hutcherson (Magnolia, TX/Lamar H.S.) scored on a sacrifice fly from UTPA senior Leighton Autrey (Stephenville, TX/Navarro J.C.).

Brooks increased the Broncs' lead to 6-2 over the Panthers as the UTPA senior connected on a two-run home run allowing Tognietti to score on the play in the top half of the third inning.

In the top half of the sixth inning, the Broncs increased their lead to 9-2 over the Panthers as Autrey scored on a wild pitch then Tognietti came to bat and connected on a two-run home run over the left-field fence.

Prairie View A&M scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to cut the scoring deficit to five runs at 9-4, but the Broncs added an insurance run in the top of the ninth inning to come away with the 10-4 victory.

Brooks finished the day for the Broncs with a pair of extra base hits in a double and home run while driving in four runs and plating a run. Tognietti finished with two hits, three runs scored and two RBI while Flores added two hits and two runs scored.

Jeremy Johnson (League City, TX/Alvin J.C.) also added two hits for the Broncs, who pounded out 11 total hits in the victory over Prairie View A&M.

Guajardo picked up the victory for the Broncs and improved his record to 1-1 on the 2007 campaign as the UTPA senior hurled 6.0 innings, giving up four runs - two earned - on six hits.

The Broncs improved their record to 9-13 on the 2007 season with the victory.

UTPA will be back in action this weekend with a three-game series against Stephen F. Austin in Nacogdoches, TX, beginning on Friday (Mar. 9).
