The University of Texas-Pan American baseball team was held scorelss in their setback to Stephen F. Austin University on Friday (Mar. 9) at Jaycees Field in Nacogdoches, TX, by a final score of 7-0.
The Bronc's three-game win streak was put to and end as they drop to 9-14 on the season while SFA improves to 8-10.
Lumberjack pitcher Jared Schrom (2-1) fanned 10 Bronc batters in a complete-game effort, allowing just three hits in the win against UTPA.
Josh Wymer (Fort Worth, TX/Foster Ridge H.S.) gave up just three hits in the first six innings of play, and only gave up two runs until SFA picked up a four-hit, five-run outing in the bottom of the seventh frame to seal the victory. Wymer (3-4) finished his seven innings on the mound giving up seven hits, seven runs and four strikeouts from the 28 batters faced.
The Lumberjacks picked up a run in the bottom of the first inning and never relinquished the lead in their victory over the Broncs. Lead-off man Jeff Brewer made it home after stealing second base on a Kevin Crabtree RBI single to left center field. Crabtree was the only player on both sides to record a multi-hit performance on 2-for-4 at the plate while driving in one run and scoring one run.
For the Broncs, three players recorded hits in Dominic Tognietti (Katy, TX/James E. Taylor H.S.), Patrick Brooks (Vallejo, CA/Santa Rosa J.C.) and Blake Whittlesey (Marble Falls, TX/UT-Brownsville).
Senior Osiel Flores' (Mission, TX/UT-Brownsville) and Roly Gonzalez (Miami, FL/UNC-Greensboro) eight-game hitting streaks were put to an end by Schrom.
The Broncs return to action in a rematch against the Lumberjacks on Saturday (Mar. 10) at Jaycee Field in Nacogdoches, TX, with the first pitch set for 2:00 p.m.
