Box Score
The University of Texas-Pan American men's baseball team escaped with a 5-4 victory over North Dakota State University in game three of a three-game series on Sunday (Apr. 1) at the Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
The Broncs improved to 12-22 on the season while the Bison dropped to 3-14 on the year.
After five scoreless innings between the two squads, the Broncs posted three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning when they collected four hits, including an RBI single up the middle off the bat of Leighton Autrey (Stephenville, TX/Navarro J.C.) that accounted for the second run of the ballgame after Roly Gonzalez (Miami, FL/UNC-Greensboro) scored on a wild pitch. Dominic Tognietti (Katy, TX/James E. Taylor H.S.) represented the run that put the Broncs up by a 3-0 margin when he crossed home plate safely on a Jerrod Dugas (Orange, TX/Cypress-Mauriceville H.S.) ground out.
UTPA starting pitcher Josh Wymer (Fort Worth, TX/Foster Ridge H.S.) threw seven innings of hitless baseball, striking out nine NDSU batters before giving up a pair of hits that put runners on first and second that scored on a Matt Mossey triple to left field. Mossey scored on a pass ball, tying the game at three runs apiece.
The Bison took a 4-3 lead in the top of the ninth inning when Sebastian Miles hit an RBI double down the right field line, plating Billy Gazich who came in to pinch hit early in the inning.
The Broncs answered the call in the bottom of the ninth inning, taking advantage of the Bison's call to the bull pen that brought the fifth different NDSU pitcher to the mound. NDSU pitcher Ryan Langlais gave up three hits, loading the bases with two outs and Tognietti at the plate. Langlais walked Tognietti which walked home Jeremy Johnson (League City, TX/Alvin J.C.) tying the game at four runs apiece. A wild pitch gave Osiel Flores (Mission, TX/UT-Brownsville) the perfect opportunity to score the winning run, and he took it, ending the ballgame.
Steven Davila (Weslaco, TX/Weslaco H.S.) earned the victory, improving to 2-4 on the season for pitching 1.2 innings in which he allowed just three hits and one run. Langlais dropped to 0-1 on the season for giving up the winning run in the ninth.
Gonzalez was the star offensively, going 4-for-4 and scoring a run while Tognietti picked up a pair of hits and an RBI to go along with a run on the day.
The Broncs are back in action on Thursday (Apr. 5) when the head to Greeley, CO, to take part in a three-game series against Northern Colorado with game time scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
