Broncs Drop 5-3 Decision to Southland Conference-foe Texas State

The University of Texas-Pan American baseball program dropped a 5-3 decision to Southland Conference-opponent Texas State on Tuesday (Apr. 10) in San Marcos, TX.

The Bobcats took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the field inning when Thomas Field led off the frame for Texas State with a double to left field then was plated by a single up the middle from David Wood.

Texas State added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning when Wood recorded his second RBI of the game when he drove home Pat Crumpton from third base on a groundout. The second run of the frame came when Field was plated on a single to leftfield by Aaron Garza.

The Broncs tied up the game in the top of the sixth inning when the Valley's squad was able to score a trio of runs to knot the game at 3-3. Osiel Flores (Mission, TX/UT-Brownsville) was the first Bronc to cross home plate as the UTPA senior scored on an error by the Bobcat defense on a single by Roly Gonzalez (Miami, FL/UNC-Greensboro), who finished with a team-high two hits in the contest.

After advancing to second base on the Bobcat error, Gonzalez would eventually round the bases on a single by Lyndon Bartosh (Bay City, TX/Navarro J.C.) to right-centerfield. Matt Guzman (Corpus Christi, TX/UTSA) was able to plate Abraham Garcia from third base on a sacrifice fly to right field to tie the game at 3-3.

The Bobcats took the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth inning when Wood reached first base on an error then was able to cross home plate two batters later when Garza drove him home on a single to leftfield.

After taking a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning, Texas State added one more run in the following frame to take the lead to 5-3 en route to securing the victory on its home field.

Matt Shepherd (Austin, TX/Howard J.C.) recorded the loss for the Broncs and fell to 1-4 on the season as the UTPA junior hurled 5.2 innings of action, allowing four runs - all earned - on seven hits while striking out three hitters.

With the victory, Texas State improved its overall record to 24-11 on the season while the Broncs dropped to 13-26 on the 2007 campaign.

The Broncs and Bobcats will have their final game of the season on Wednesday (Apr. 11) in San Marcos, TX, with first pitch set for 3:00 p.m.
