Bobcats Rally Late; Secure 3-1 Victory over Broncs

Texas State plated three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to take a 3-1 victory over The University of Texas-Pan American baseball program on Wednesday (Apr. 11) in San Marcos, TX.

With the game scoreless heading into the later innings, the Broncs were able to post the first run of the game in the seventh frame when Osiel Flores (Mission, TX/UT-Brownsville) connected on a double to leftfield then was driven home when Patrick Brooks (Vallejo, CA/Santa Rosa J.C.) traded places for a double to make the score 1-0.

The Bobcats struck back in the bottom of the eighth inning when they posted three runs off of three UTPA relievers in the frame. Paul Goldschmidt drove home the first Texas State run when he delivered a single up the middle allowing Laurn Randall to score from third base.

Goldschmidt would eventually score the game-winning run when he crossed home plate on a ground-out by Jared Bunn. The Bobcats would add one more insurance run when Aaron Garza scored from second base on a single up the middle by Jon Lieber.

Cody Cisper (Peggs, OK/Northeastern State University) posted his best performance of the season in a no-decision as the UTPA junior hurled 7.0 innings of action allowing one run on seven hits while striking out five batters.

Steven Davila (Weslaco, TX/Weslaco H.S.) suffered the loss for the Broncs as the UTPA junior tossed 0.1 innings of action giving up two runs - both earned - on three hits.

Brooks led the Broncs with three hits to go along with one RBI while Flores collected two hits for the Valley's squad.

With the setback, UTPA dropped its overall record to 13-27 on the 2007 campaign while the Bobcats improved to 25-11 this season.

The Broncs will be back in action in the Rio Grande Valley on Saturday (Apr. 14) when UTPA welcomes Prairie View A&M to the Edinburg Baseball Stadium. The Broncs and Panthers will play a doubleheader on Saturday with first pitch set for 3:30 p.m.
