The University of Texas-Pan American men's tennis dropped a 5-2 decision to The University of Texas at San Antonio in Southland Conference action at the Orville Cox Tennis Center on Saturday (Apr. 14).
The Broncs dropped their overall record to 6-16 and 1-5 in Southland Conference action while the Roadrunners improved to 10-11 and 4-2 in conference competition. The Broncs and Roadrunners will meet again on Friday (Apr. 20) in San Antonio, TX, in the first round of the Southland Conference Tournament.
"This was a heartbreaker," said head men's and women's tennis coach Rob Hubbard. "We played close enough to where we could have won this match, but luckily we get an opportunity to play them in the first round of the conference tournament."
The Roadrunners kicked off the match by capturing the doubles' point as UTSA was able to take two of three matches from the Broncs. Robin Fernandes and Nenad Maric handed Brett Bernstein (Sugar Land, TX/Austin H.S.) and Nirvick Mohinta (Calcutta, West Bengal, India/University of New Orleans) an 8-4 setback in the number-two doubles' position.
UTSA was able to claim the doubles' point when Nate Avila and Andre Moreira recorded an 8-3 victory over Gary Bianco (Annecy, France/Lycee Berthollet) and Shashank Vij (Helsinki, Finland/University of New Orleans) in the number-three spot of the lineup.
The lone victory for the Broncs came in the top flight of doubles' competition as Ivan Avila (Mexico City, Mexico/Texas Southern University) and David Lopez-Heredia (Panama, Republic of Panama/Eckerd College) defeated Adam Becker and Rodrigo Morgado by a 9-7 decision.
Lopez-Heredia recorded a three-set victory over Maric in the number-three singles' position as the UTPA sophomore posted scores of 7-6, 4-6 and 10-8.
The second victory for the Broncs came in the number-four spot of the rotation as Vij defeated Avila by default. Serving 4-5 in the game, Vij claimed the victory as Avila was called for unsportsmanlike conduct after grabbing the hat of the UTPA newcomer.
In action at the number-one position in singles' competition, Fernandes defeated Avila by scores of 6-4 and 6-4 while Morgado recorded a 6-4, 7-6 triumph over Bianco in the number-two spot of the rotation.
The Roadrunners also claimed victories in the number-five and -six spots of the rotation as Moreira defeated Bernstein by scores of 7-5 and 6-0 while Mohinta dropped a 6-2, 6-3 decision to Becker.
The Broncs and Roadrunners will square-off again for the second time in less than a week as they are paired together in the first round of the Southland Conference Tournament in San Antonio, TX, on Friday (Apr. 20).
