The University of Texas-Pan American baseball returned to its winning ways as the Broncs swept a doubleheader from Prairie View A&M at the Edinburg Baseball Stadium on Saturday (Apr. 14).
With the victories, the Broncs improved their overall record to 15-27 while the Panthers dropped to 24-17 on the 2007 campaign.
UTPA 7, Prairie View A&M 3
In the first game of the doubleheader, the Broncs came back from a 3-1 deficit to score six runs in final two innings of action to take the 7-3 triumph.
Prairie View A&M got on the board in the top of the third inning when Calvin Lester hit an RBI-single that drove home Michael Richard before the Panthers added another run courtesy of a George McDonald RBI-single, making it a 2-0 ball game.
The Broncs responded in the bottom half of the inning when Nick Bourn (San Antonio, TX/Warren H.S.) led off the inning by moving to scoring position with a double to leftfield. After advancing to third base on a Roly Gonzalez (Miami, FL/UNC-Greensboro) sacrifice bunt, catcher Osiel Flores (Mission, TX/UT-Brownsville) sent Bourn home with an RBI-single to leftfield to put the score at 2-1.
The Panthers added to their run total in the fifth frame when UTPA starting pitcher Josh Wymer (Fort Worth, TX/Fossil Ridge H.S.) walked McDonald with the bases loaded, bringing home Richard uncontested to make it a 3-1 game.
UTPA evened the score at three runs apiece in the bottom of the fifth inning with a two-hit, two-run frame. The pair of runs came on a Patrick Brooks (Vallejo, CA/Santa Ana J.C.) two-RBI single to left-center with the bases loaded that plated Matt Guzman (Corpus Christi, TX/UT-San Antonio) and Gonzalez.
The Broncs exploded in the bottom of the sixth inning with a four-run, four-hit stanza in which a Guzman doubled down the leftfield line bringing in the go-ahead run by Abraham Garcia (McAllen, TX/McAllen Memorial H.S.). UTPA added three insurance runs as Jerrod Dugas (Orange, TX/Cypress-Mauriceville H.S.), Gonzalez and Flores each picked up RBI in the inning to make it a 7-3 contest.
UTPA hurler Wymer earned the victory, improving his record to 4-5, while Prairie View starting pitcher Wrandal Taylor dropped to 7-4 on the 2007 campaign.
A trio of Bronc hitters recorded multi-hit games in Flores, Guzman and Dugas. Flores went 2-for-3, including two RBI while teammate Guzman added a RBI to go along with his 2-for-2 performance.
The Panthers were led offensively by Richard who went 3-for-4 to go along with two runs scored.
UTPA 9, Prairie View A&M 6
The Broncs concluded the two-game sweep on Saturday afternoon after the Valley's squad pounded out 11 hits en route to securing the 9-6 triumph.
After falling behind early by a 1-0 count, the Broncs exploded for five runs in the bottom of the second inning, which was highlighted by a two-run double Flores that drove in both Bourn and Nick Spears (Austin, TX/Bowie H.S.).
The Panthers came back to get within one run at 5-4 in the top of the fourth inning when Sean McQueen and Calvin Lester each recorded a RBI-single in the frame.
The Broncs responded in the bottom of the fourth inning when Brooks singled to right-field then rounded the bases on a throwing error by PVAMU shortstop Myrio Richard to make the score 6-4.
After the Panthers scored a single run in the top of the fifth inning, the Broncs came back to score two on their side of the scoreboard when Bourn drove home Jeremy Johnson (League City, TX/Alvin J.C.) on a single up the middle. The second insurance run for the Broncs came when Spears came home from second base on a RBI-single by Flores.
The Broncs each traded runs in the seventh inning before the UTPA bullpen duo of Philip Rodriguez (Edinburg, TX/Edinburg North H.S.) and Ray Silva (Clearlake, CA/Santa Rosa J.C.) held the Panthers scoreless in the final two frames en route to the victory.
Bourn finished the game with a trio of hits to go along with one RBI and one run scored while Flores added a pair of hits and three RBI, and Lyndon Bartosh (Bay City, TX/Navarro J.C.) collected two hits.
Chad Linder (Reklaw, TX/Rusk H.S.) recorded the victory for the Broncs as the UTPA senior hurled 7.0 innings, allowing six runs - four earned - on eight hits and striking out three hitters. Silva picked up his third save of the season after he held the Panthers hitless in the ninth inning.
The Broncs and Panthers will conclude their three-game series on Sunday (Apr. 15) at the Edinburg Baseball Stadium with first pitch slated for 12:00 p.m.
