The University of Texas at San Antonio captured the first game of a two-game series with The University of Texas-Pan American baseball program by a 12-2 count on Tuesday (Apr. 17) evening in San Antonio, TX.
With the setback, the Valley's squad dropped its overall record to 15-29 on the 2007 baseball campaign with the Roadrunners improve to 22-15 on the season.
The Roadrunners got all the help they needed on the evening from UTSA freshman Ryan Proudfoot as the UTSA hurler tossed 7.0 innings, allowing only four hits and one run while striking out three hitters in the contest.
UTSA took a quick 3-0 lead in the first inning, which was highlighted by a two-run home run by Roadrunners' third baseman Ryan Saltzgaber. Designated hitter Tim Palincsar, who finished the evening with four hits, recorded a triple in the frame to right-center field then was plated on the following at-bat by Mike Rockett.
The Broncs responded for a single run in the top of the second inning with UTPA newcomer Dominic Tognietti (Katy, TX/James E. Taylor H.S.) connected on his fourth home run of the season to open up the frame.
In the fifth inning of action, UTSA recorded four runs and took a 7-1 lead on the Broncs when Marshal Davis opened up the inning with a single to leftfield then was driven home by a two-run home run by UTSA second baseman James Keithley.
The Roadrunners collected two more runs in the frame when Zach Etheredge connected on a two-run single in the inning, which allowed both Palincsar and Rockett to be plated.
After adding a single run in the bottom of the sixth inning and a pair of runs in the seventh frame, the Broncs were able to add a single run in the top of the eighth frame when Nick Bourn (San Antonio, TX/Warren H.S.) connected on his first home run of his collegiate career to cut the deficit to 10-2.
The Roadrunners added two insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, which was capped by a two-run home run by UTSA pinch hitter Josh Wilson.
Abraham Garcia (McAllen, TX/McAllen Memorial H.S.) led the Broncs on the offensive side of the lineup card with a pair of hits while Osiel Flores (Mission, TX/UT-Brownsville) also added two base knocks for the Broncs. It was the fourth consecutive game that Flores had finished with at least two hits in the contest.
Matt Shepherd (Austin, TX/Howard J.C.) recorded the loss for the Broncs and dropped his record to 1-4 on the season after the UTPA hurler tossed 5.0 innings, allowing seven runs - all earned - on nine hits while striking out one hitter.
The Broncs and Roadrunners will wrap-up their two-game series on Wednesday (Apr. 18) with first pitch slated for 3:00 p.m.
