UTPA Men's Tennis Falls to Lamar, 5-2, in Conference Action

The University of Texas-Pan American men's tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision in Southland Conference action to Lamar in Beaumont, TX, on Sunday (Apr. 1).

The Cardinals started off the match by capturing the doubles' point as Lamar won two of the three matches with Filip Kanczula and Maciej Bogusz leading the way in the number-one position with an 8-2 victory over Ivan Avila (Mexico City, Mexico/Texas Southern) and Gary Bianco (Annecy, France/Lycee Berthollet).

The Broncs received a victory in the number-two spot of the rotation as Brett Bernstein (Sugar Land, TX/Austin H.S.) and Nirvick Mohinta (Calcutta, West Bengal, India/University of New Orleans) defeated the Cardinals' team of David Wanja and Emmanuel Olivier by a score of 8-4.

David Lopez-Heredia (Panama, Republic of Panama/Eckerd College) and Shashank Vij (Helsinki, Finland/University of New Orleans) fell in the number-three position of the doubles' competition by a score of 8-2 to the Lamar duo of Mario Janjic and Andres Medina.

In singles' action, Bianco recorded a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Janjic in the number-two position while Bernstein defeated Olivier by scores of 6-2 and 6-3 in the number-five spot in the rotation.

Kanczula defeated Avila in the top flight of singles' action by scores of 7-6 (6-0), 4-6 and 6-3 while Bogusz handed Lopez-Heredia a setback in three sets by scores of 6-3, 4-6 and 7-6 (4-0). Wanja won in straight sets over Vij by scores of 6-2 and 6-3 in the number-four position, and Mohinta fell to Medina in the number-six spot of the rotation by scores of 7-5 and 6-3.

The Broncs dropped their overall record to 6-13 on the 2007 spring campaign and 1-3 in Southland Conference action.

The UTPA men's tennis team will be back in action on Wednesday (Apr. 4) in Dallas, TX, as the Broncs take the court against Conference USA-opponent SMU.
