Broncs Fall to UTSA in Southland Conference Tournament

The University of Texas-Pan American men's tennis dropped a 4-1 decision to The University of Texas at San Antonio in the first round of the Southland Conference Tournament in San Antonio, TX, on Friday (Apr. 20).

The first action of the day came in the doubles' competition where the Broncs captured two of the three matches en route to taking a quick 1-0 lead in the contest.

Brett Bernstein (Sugar Land, TX/Austin H.S.) and Gary Bianco (Annecy, France/Lycee Berthollet) defeated Robin Fernandes and Nenad Maric by a score of 8-6 in the number-two spot of the lineup.

The UTPA duo of Nirvick Mohinta (Calcutta, West Bengal, India/University of New Orleans) and Shashank Vij (Helsinki, Finland/University of New Orleans) captured a 9-7 victory over Nate Avila and Andre Moreira in the number-three spot of the rotation.

The Roadrunners picked up their only doubles' match in the top flight where the team of Adam Becker and Rodrigo Morgado defeated Ivan Avila (Mexico City, Mexico/Texas Southern) and David Lopez-Heredia (Panama, Republic of Panama/Eckerd College) by an 8-5 count.

While the Roadrunners had trouble finding a victory in doubles' competition, they were able to come back in the singles' match to advance to the second round of the Southland Conference Tournament.

Morgado posted a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Avila in the number-one spot of the lineup while Fernandes defeated Bianco by scores of 6-3 and 6-4.

Lopez-Heredia dropped a 6-2, 6-2 decision to Maric in the number-three spot, and the Roadrunners were able to claim the match when Moreira handed Vij a 6-0, 6-1 setback in the number-four spot of the lineup.

The Broncs, who came into the Southland Conference Tournament as the number-six seed, concluded the 2007 spring campaign with a 6-16 overall record.
