The University of Texas-Pan American baseball program dropped its fifth straight game with a 21-6 setback to Dallas Baptist on Friday (Apr. 20) in Dallas, TX.
With the setback, the Broncs dropped to 15-32 on the season while the Patriots improved to 22-18 on the 2007 campaign.
The Patriots jumped out early on the Valley's squad as the home team scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning, which was highlighted by a three-run home run by DBU sophomore Trevor Head. In the following at-bat, Patriots' designated hitter Jimmy Thoma connected on a solo home run off of UTPA starter Chad Linder (Reklaw, TX/Rusk H.S.).
The Broncs were able to cut the lead to 5-1 in the top of the second inning when UTPA senior Blake Whittlesey (Marble Falls, TX/UT-Brownsville) connected on his first home run of the season with a solo shot over the right-field fence.
After adding a single in the bottom of second and third innings, Dallas Baptist opened up the flood gates in the bottom of the fifth inning when the Patriots posted 12 runs in the frame. Austin Krum connected on a bases-loaded triple in the frame, and by the end of the fifth innings, the Patriots held a 19-1 advantage on the scoreboard.
The Patriots scored another run in the bottom of the sixth inning before trading runs in the seventh frame to take the score to 21-2.
The Broncs were able to record their biggest inning of the evening in the final frame when the Valley's squad posted four runs on the scoreboard, which was highlighted by an Abraham Garcia (McAllen, TX/McAllen Memorial H.S.) grand slam to plate Lyndon Bartosh (Bay City, TX/Navarro J.C.), Matt Guzman (Corpus Christi, TX/UTSA) and Patrick Brooks (Vallejo, CA/Santa Rosa J.C.).
Randall Taylor recorded the victory for the Patriots as the DBU right-hander tossed 6.0 innings, allowing one run on three hits while striking out eight hitters in the contest en route to upping his record to 5-2 on the season.
Linder suffered the setback for the Broncs and dropped his record to 2-2 on the season after the UTPA senior tossed 2.0 innings, allowing seven runs - all earned - on six hits.
The Broncs and Patriots will conclude their weekend series on Saturday (Apr. 21) with a 12:00 start at Patriot Field.
