Box Score

The University of Texas-Pan American baseball team suffered an 11-1 road setback against the University of Texas in Austin, TX, on Tuesday (Apr. 24) at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.

The Broncs dropped their seventh straight game, falling to 15-34 on the season while the Longhorns improved to 34-12.

The lone UTPA highlight came in the top of the fourth frame when Nick Spears (Austin, TX/Bowie H.S.) picked up his first home run and first RBI of the season to put the Broncs on the scoreboard. Other than Spears' homer, the Broncs only offense came from center fielder Nick Bourn (San Antonio, TX/Warren H.S.) who went 2-for-2 at the plate, including an extra-base hit to lead off the top of the sixth inning.

UTPA picked up just five hits compared to UT with 15, as the trio of Bronc hurlers seeing action had their hands full. The Longhorns were led offensively by Kyle Russell who went 4-for-5 in the batter's box to go along with five RBI while scoring three runs himself. Russell was a one-man show for the Longhorns who only had one other player record a multi-hit performance in Chance Wheeless.

UT was able to build an early two-run lead in the bottom of the first inning on a two-run home run by Russell. The Longhorns were held scoreless for the following three innings before posting a four-run fifth inning to take a commanding 6-1 lead on a Bronc squad that struggled to put together a string of hits on the evening.

The Longhorns were able to turn five hits in the final two innings of play into five runs which included three scores in the sixth inning and two more insurance runs in the seventh stanza.

Josh Wymer (Fort Worth, TX/Foster Ridge H.S.) gets the loss in the game, pitching five innings while allowing eight hits and six earned runs. Austin Wood earned the win for the Longhorns for his six inning, four hit performance in which he fanned five Bronc batters.

After playing its previous six games on the road, UTPA gets a much needed home stint when they host a three-game series against Dallas Baptist University beginning with a doubleheader on Friday with first pitch slated for 3:00 p.m. at the Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
