April 27, 2007

Box Score

DBU 10, UTPA 0
The University of Texas-Pan American baseball team dropped game one of a doubleheader against Dallas Baptist University by a score of 10-0 at the Edinburg Baseball Stadium on Friday (Apr. 27).

With a 10-run rule in effect, the Patriots needed just seven innings of baseball to improve to 24-18 on the season while the Broncs drop to 15-35, including an eight-game winless streak.

The Patriots jumped out to quick one-run lead in the first inning, but it was a pair of home runs from Evan Bigley in the third and fourth innings that accounted for five Patriot runs. The first homer in the third frame drove in two runs while the shot in the fourth inning was good for three scores, putting DBU up by a 7-0 count.

The Patriots added three runs in the top of the seventh inning on four hits to make it a 10-0 ballgame. Garrett Baker was responsible for the final two runs of the game on a two-run home run that plated himself and Austin Knight.

Senior Chad Linder (Reklaw, TX/Rusk H.S.) suffered the loss for the Broncs, dropping his record to 2-3 on the season while DBU's Jordan Meaker improved to 5-2 with the win. Meaker limited the Broncs to three hits in the seven innings while walking just two batters.

UTPA 5, DBU 4
The Broncs held on to beat the Patriots in game two of a double header by a score of 5-4 at the Edinburg Baseball Stadium, snapping an eight-game winless skid.

UTPA improved to 16-35 on the season while DBU dropped to 24-19 in a game in which they failed to capitalize on a trio of Bronc miscues on the evening.

Despite scoring first in the ballgame, UTPA posted a three-run third inning when Abraham Garcia (McAllen, TX/McAllen Memorial H.S.) led off the inning with a single up the middle before a Leighton Autrey (Stephenville, TX/Navarro J.C.) two RBI double to left field with the bases loaded made it a 2-1 game. Dominic Tognietti (Katy, TX/James E. Taylor H.S.) accounted for the third run of the inning when he advanced home on a Jerrod Dugas (Orange, TX/Cypress-Mauriceville H.S.) sacrifice fly, putting the Broncs up by a 3-1 margin.

UTPA scored runs in the sixth and seventh innings, but the Patriots fought back to within on run with the score at 5-4 when DBU scored a pair of runs in the top of the eighth inning. The runs were reminiscent of the first game in the doubleheader as Trevor Head picked up the RBI on a home run.

Closer Ray Silva (Clearlake, CA/Santa Ana J.C.) entered the game, and was able to close out the final two innings for UTPA, earning his fourth save of the season. Matt Shepherd (Austin, TX/Howard J.C.) picked up his second win of the season, improving to 2-5 while DBU's Randall Taylor gets tagged with the loss.

The Patriots collected eight hits on the night compared to the Broncs with six, but DBU left 11 runners stranded on base to UTPA's eight. The Broncs showed their defensive prowess, recording three double plays in the game, including one that accounted for the final two outs to seal the victory.

The Broncs return to action on Saturday (Apr. 28) when they take-on the Patriots in game three of a three-game series at the Edinburg Baseball Stadium with first pitch slated for 12:30 p.m.
