The University of Texas-Pan American men's tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision to Southland Conference-opponent The University of Texas-Arlington on Thursday (Apr. 5) in Arlington, TX.
The Broncs dropped their overall record to 6-15 on the season and fell to 1-4 in Southland Conference action while the Mavericks improved to 9-7 overall and 4-0 in conference competition.
Gary Bianco (Annecy, France/Lycee Berthollet) recorded the only victory of the afternoon for the Broncs as the UTPA senior defeated Daniel Omana by scores of 6-2 and 6-3 in the number-two singles' position.
Ivan Avila (Mexico City, Mexico/Texas Southern) suffered a 6-4, 6-4 setback to Diego Mattar in the top flight of singles' action while David Lopez-Heredia (Panama, Republic of Panama/Eckerd College) dropped a 6-3, 6-3 decision to Alberto Agis in the number-three position.
Shashank Vij (Helsinki, Finland/University of New Orleans) fell to Javier Herrera by scores of 6-4 and 6-0 in the number-four position while Dmitry Minkin recorded a 6-1, 6-2 decision victory over Brett Bernstein (Sugar Land, TX/Austin H.S.) in the number-five spot of the rotation.
Nirvick Mohinta (Calcutta, West Bengal, India/University of New Orleans) dropped a close decision to Gonzalo Bienzobas by scores of 6-1 and 9-5 in the number-six spot of the rotation.
In doubles' action, Avila and Lopez-Heredia dropped an 8-5 decision to Omana and Bienzobas in the top flight of doubles' action while Mattar and Herrera handed Bernstein and Mohinta an 8-2 setback in the number-two position of doubles' competition.
Bianco and Vij dropped a tough match in the number-three spot of the rotation by an 8-7 (4-0) count to Agis and Minkin.
The Broncs will be back in action at the Orville Cox Tennis Center when UTPA welcomes Southland Conference-foe The University of Texas at San Antonio on April 14th.
