Box Score
The University of Texas-Pan American baseball team defeated Texas A&M - Corpus Christi by a score of 11-3 on its final home game of the season in which nine seniors were honored at the Edinburg Baseball Stadium on Tuesday (May 1).
UTPA improved to 17-36 and 2-1 in the season series against the Islanders who dropped to 23-24 during the 2007 campaign.
The Broncs got on the board early and often, scoring nine runs on seven hits through the first two innings of play.
In the first inning, UTPA picked up three runs sparked by Leighton Autrey (Stephenville, TX/Navarro J.C.) stand-up, two RBI double to left center that plated Lyndon Bartosh (Bay City, TX/Navarro J.C.) and Osiel Flores (Mission, TX/UT-Brownsville). Blake Whittlesey (Marble Falls, TX/UT-Brownsville) was credited with the third run of the opening frame on an RBI single that drove in Autrey to put the Broncs up by a 3-0 count.
In the second inning, the Broncs exploded with six runs on four hits, including a Matt Guzman (Corpus Christi, TX/UT-San Antonio) double to right center that was good for three RBI. Senior Patrick Brooks (Vallejo, CA/Santa Rosa J.C.) picked up his team-leading 36th RBI on a single through the right side, before Bartosh recorded a multi-RBI hit on a double to right center that plated a pair of Bronc base runners to go ahead 9-1.
The Islanders failed to score multiple runs in any inning, scoring a single run in each the second, third and fifth innings. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi finished the game with three runs, 10 hits and one error in the losing effort.
UTPA added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth inning when Abraham Garcia (McAllen, TX/McAllen Memorial H.S.) led off the inning with a double to center field before being plated by Autrey's second extra-base hit of the evening that scored two.
Autrey led the Broncs offensively with his 3-for-4 performance in which he recorded a season-high four RBI while scoring two runs. Garcia also had a multi-hit night, going 2-for-4 to go along with two runs scored.
Josh Wymer (Fort Worth, TX/Foster Ridge H.S.) pitched a complete game to earn the win, striking out five batters and walking just two to improve to 5-6 on the season. The Islander's James Burdine fell to 2-1 in the loss, allowing eight runs on five hits in 1.1 innings on the mound.
The Broncs will close out the 2007 season on the road when they face nationally-ranked Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, TX, in a three-game series against the Horned Frogs beginning on Friday (May 11).
