The University of Texas-Pan American baseball team dropped game one of a three game series against Texas Christian University by a score of 4-3 in Fort Worth, TX, on Friday (May 11) at Lupton Stadium.
The Broncs fall to 17-36 on the season with the road setback while the 23rd-ranked Horned Frogs improved to 38-11.
UTPA struck first, making it a 1-0 ballgame in the top of the first inning when a Dominic Tognietti (Katy, TX/James E. Taylor) ground out gave Osiel Flores (Mission, TX/UT-Brownsville) the opportunity to make it home from third after getting on base with a double down the right field line.
TCU responded by knotting the game at one run apiece with a one run, two hit bottom of the first inning. The run came from a home run off the bat of TCU lead-off man Bryan Kervin.
The Broncs added another run in the fourth frame when Tognietti led the inning off with a double down the left field line before advancing on a passed ball and finally making it home when Leighton Autrey (Stephenville, TX/Navarro J.C.), collecting an RBI on the play to go ahead by a 2-1 margin.
The Horned Frogs again followed the Bronc score with a run of their own off the bat of Keith Conlon that scored Austin Adams, making it a 2-2 ball game going into the top of the fifth inning.
TCU added to their run total in the bottom of the sixth inning on a two-run home run from Adams who finished the game with a 1-for-4 performance, including two RBI to go along with two runs to give the Horned Frogs a 4-2 lead.
The Broncs tried to rally back in the top of the ninth inning when they capitalized on a trio of TCU pitching woes that included a Bronc batter hit by a pitch, a wild pitch and a passed ball that put pinch runner Ruben Shives, Jr. (Edinburg, TX/Edinburg H.S.) on third. Shives scored on a Blake Whittlesey fielder's choice RBI to close the gap to 4-3 before the Horned Frogs retired the side to end the game.
Despite pitching an eight-inning complete game in which he allowed seven hits to go along with five strikeouts, UTPA ace and Fort Worth native Josh Wymer (Fort Worth, TX/Foster Ridge H.S.) dropped to 5-7 on the season while TCU's Jake Arrieta improved to 8-3. Sam Demel earned his 11th save of the season, finishing the final 1.1 innings for the Horned Frogs.
The Broncs return to action in game two of the series against the Horned Frogs in Fort Worth, TX, at Lupton Stadium on Saturday (May 12) with first pitch scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
