Horned Frogs Conclude Sweep of Broncs by 6-1 Count

May 13, 2007

The University of Texas-Pan American baseball program concluded its 2007 campaign on a down note as the Broncs were swept in a three-game series against 23rd-ranked TCU in Fort Worth, TX, this past weekend.

The final game of the three-game set came on Sunday at Lupton Stadium where the Horned Frogs handed the Broncs a 6-1 setback in the shortened seven-inning contest due to lightning. With the setback, the Broncs concluded their 2007 season with a 17-39 record while TCU will head into regional competition with a 40-11 mark.

Already up in the contest by a 1-0 score, TCU added an insurance run in the bottom of the fourth inning when Matt Vern doubled to centerfield then was plated in the next at-bat on a single by catcher Andrew Walker.

Vern finished with a 3-for-3 performance with a pair of runs scored while Walker added two hits and one RBI for the Horned Frogs.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Horned Frogs put the game out of reach as Austin Adams connected on his 10th home run of the season with a three-run blast over the centerfield fence off of UTPA reliever Steven Davila (Weslaco, TX/Weslaco H.S.).

The blast by Adams gave the Horned Frogs a 5-0 advantage, but their inning would not conclude as TCU added one more run in the frame when Vern doubled down the left-field line only to be plated by Walker, who also connected on a double down the left-field line.

The Broncs scored their only run of the contest in the top of the sixth frame when Roly Gonzalez (Miami, FL/UNC-Greensboro) reached first base on an infield single then stole second base. UTPA freshman Dominic Tognietti (Katy, TX/James E. Taylor H.S.) connected on a single to right-centerfield, which allowed Gonzalez to come home from second base and cut the score down to 6-1.

However that would be the last at-bat for the Broncs of the 2007 campaign as lightning cut the game short and TCU came away with the 6-1 victory on their home field.

Steven Trout connected on three hits in the contest for the Horned Frogs while Adams drove in three runs - all coming on his 10th home run of the season.

Tognietti led the Broncs on the offensive side as the UTPA freshman collected two hits and drove in the team's only run of the contest.

Chance Corgan picked up the win for the Horned Frogs and improved his record to 7-1 on the season as the TCU hurler tossed 5.0 innings, allowing zero runs on four hits and sitting down on UTPA hitter.

Matt Shepherd (Austin, TX/Howard J.C.) collected the loss for the Broncs as the UTPA right-hander tossed 4.1 innings of action, allowing four runs - all earned - on seven hits. He dropped his overall record to 2-6 on the 2007 campaign.
