The UTPA women's volleyball program dropped a pair of matches to finish the Sun Bowl Invitational with a 1-3 record following setbacks to UTEP and Marist on Saturday (Aug. 25) in El Paso, TX.
UTEP 3, UTPA 1 (30-26, 15-30, 30-21, 30-18)
The Lady Broncs continued to show significant progress in the rebuilding of the women's volleyball program as the Valley's squad took the host-team UTEP to its breaking point before falling in three sets.
The Miners and Lady Broncs both came out strong in the first set of the series with UTEP escaping with a 30-26 victory to take a 1-0 advantage. The Lady Broncs recorded a higher hitting percentage in the game with a .263 compared to .244 for the Miners, but UTEP was able to collect more kills (17-15) and total attacks (45-38) in the frame.
In the second set, the Lady Broncs dominated the Miners from the first serve to the final kill as UTPA came away with a 30-15 victory. The Lady Broncs had their offense clicking right from the get-go as they connected on 16 of 35 total attacks en route to finishing with a .371 hitting percentage.
The Lady Broncs' defense was just as stifling as UTPA held the Miners to a -.025, including eight errors with seven kills in 40 total attacks.
While the Lady Broncs' offense was clicking in the second set, it was the offense at the hands of the Miners that controlled the third game as UTEP came away with a 30-21 victory. The Miners connected on a .400 hitting percentage with 19 kills in 40 total attacks with only three errors in the process.
The Miners were able to seal the victory in the fourth set as UTEP came away with a 30-18 victory. The defense of the Miners played their strongest game of the match as UTEP held the Lady Broncs to a match-low eight kills to go along with a .023 hitting percentage while connecting on 15 kills in 53 total attacks on their home court.
In the statistical categories, the Miners held advantages over the Lady Broncs in kills (58-50), total attacks (178-153), assists (53-47), service aces (9-2) and total blocks (9.0-6.0) while UTPA connected on a match-high 84 digs compared to 71 for the home squad.
Amy Sanders finished with a double-double for the Miners with a 20-kill, 16-dig performance while Catherine Chavez also notched a double-double with 11 kills and 12 digs.
Patty Jarmoc quarterbacked the UTEP offense with a match-high 44 assists while Elsa Reyes and Christie Murphy each added 17 and 16 digs, respectively.
UTPA junior Kellie Phillips (Chandler, AZ/Corona del Sol H.S.) recorded one of her best all-around performance of her career with a team-high 17 kills to go along with 20 digs en route to finishing with a .295 hitting percentage.
Chelsea Blakely (Houston, TX/J. Frank Dobie H.S.) dished out a match-high 39 assists to go along with 13 digs while Jordan Davila (Houston, TX/Mayde Creek H.S.) led the Lady Broncs with 23 digs for the third consecutive match.
UTPA sophomore Rebecca Toddy (McAllen, TX/McAllen Memorial H.S.) added 10 digs for the Lady Broncs while Deanna Schneyer (Diamond Bar, CA/Diamond Ranch H.S.) notched nine kills and four blocks.
Marist 3, UTPA 1 (30-21, 31-29, 21-30, 30-22)
In their final match of the Sun Bowl Invitational, the Lady Broncs dropped a 3-1 decision to Marist College by scores of 30-21, 31-29, 21-30 and 30-19 en route to concluding their first weekend of the season with a 1-3 record.
The Red Foxes came out strong in the first frame as they posted a 30-21 victory in large part to a team hitting percentage of .324 with 16 kills in 37 total attacks with four miscues in the process. Following a solid performance against UTEP, the Lady Broncs struggled offensively in the initial frame with a .140 hitting percentage.
The Lady Broncs and Red Foxes put forth one of the best matches of the Sun Bowl Invitational in the second frame with Marist escaping with a 31-29 victory to take a 2-0 advantage. The Valley's squad concluded the frame with a .217 hitting percentage with a frame-high 18 kills compared to 16 for the Red Foxes.
UTPA was able to come back from a hard setback in the second frame to take the third frame by a 30-21 decision as the Lady Broncs' defense stifled Marist into recording a .065 hitting percentage with the Red Foxes committing 10 errors in 46 total attacks.
In the fourth frame of the series, the Red Foxes were able to pull away at the end of the game to take a 30-22 victory to seal the victory.
Marist setter Dawn Jan recorded one of the strongest performances of her career with a 53-assist, 15-dig performance while Allie Burke and Joanna Foss collected 14 and 13 digs, respectively.
Alexandra Schultze notched a team-high 17 kills while Kelsey Schaefer collected a double-double with 11 kills and 18 digs for the Red Foxes.
Phillips notched her best match of the tournament with a contest-high 25 kills in 67 total attacks to go along with 12 digs to lead the Lady Broncs. Blakely collected a double-double in the match with 47 assists and 10 digs while Marci Logan (Centennial, CO/Arapahoe H.S.) and Danielle Reed (League City, TX/Clear Creek H.S.) notched 11 and 10 kills, respectively.
Davila led the Lady Broncs on the defensive side of the court with a career-high and match-high 31 digs.
The Lady Broncs will be back in action on August 28th with a match-up against Southland Conference-foe University of Texas at San Antonio in San Antonio, TX.
