The University of Texas at San Antonio notched its first victory of the season with a straight-set victory (30-18, 30-21, 30-21) over the UTPA women's volleyball team on Tuesday (Aug. 28) in San Antonio, TX.
The Roadrunners used an over-powering offense combined with a stifling defense to surrender the Lady Broncs in three sets. UTSA concluded the match with a .318 hitting percentage with 50 kills in 110 total attacks with 15 errors compared to a .065 hitting percentage off of the hands of the Valley's program as the Lady Broncs notched 27 kills in 108 total attacks with 20 hitting miscues.
The Lady Broncs recorded a season-low six kills in the first game of the match against the Roadrunners as UTSA collected a .357 hitting percentage en route to securing a 30-21 victory to take a 1-0 advantage.
With every passing match, the Lady Broncs' offense improved, but still had no answer for a UTSA seeking its first victory of the season as the Roadrunners took the second game by a 30-21 decision. In that match, UTPA notched a .089 hitting percentage while UTSA dropped to a .213 mark.
The third and final match of the contest proved to be the best offensive contest for both teams, but while the Lady Broncs improved on the offensive side of the net so did the Roadrunners. UTSA notched their best game of the season with a .429 hitting percentage with 19 kills in 35 total attacks with four errors while the Lady Broncs notched a .132 mark with 11 kills in 38 chances with six miscues.
UTSA newcomer Kendra Rowland finished with a match-high 19 kills to go along with a .533 hitting percentage while also recording a match-high 7.0 total blocks, including five block assists. Victoria Prior notched 17 kills, seven digs, five service aces and four total blocks for the Roadrunners in the three-set victory.
Audrey Hiser was the lone player in the match to collect a double-double as the UTSA setter dished out a match-high 40 assists to go along with 13 digs for the Roadrunners.
Kellie Phillips (Chandler, AZ/Corona del Sol H.S.) finished with six kills and 12 digs for the Lady Broncs while Marci Logan (Centennial, CO/Arapahoe H.S.) and Danielle Reed (League City, TX/Clear Creek H.S.) collected six and five kills, respectively.
Chelsea Blakely (Houston, TX/J. Frank Dobie H.S.) dished out 22 assists to aid the Lady Broncs while Rebecca Toddy (McAllen, TX/McAllen Memorial H.S.) finished with a match-high and career-high 17 digs in the contest.
With the setback, the Lady Broncs fell to 1-4 on the season and will be back in action on Friday (Aug. 31) when UTPA travels to Huntsville, TX, for the Sam Houston State Tournament. The Lady Broncs will square-off against Sun Belt Conference-opponent University of Louisiana at Lafayette in the first round with match time slated for 9:00 a.m.
