The University of Texas-Pan American women's volleyball program picked up a pair of victories on the first day of action at the Prairie View A&M Tournament on Friday (Sept. 14) in Prairie View, TX.

The Lady Broncs defeated the host-Panthers in the first match of the tournament then recorded a five-set triumph over Mountain West Conference-foe Air Force Academy en route to improving their overall record to 4-10 on the season.

UTPA 3, Prairie View A&M 0 (30-21, 30-25, 30-19)
In the first match of the tournament, the Lady Broncs recorded a straight-set victory over the Panthers by scores of 30-21, 30-25 and 30-19.

The Lady Broncs recorded their best overall game in the first set as the Valley's team recorded a team hitting percentage of .542 with 14 kills in 24 total attacks with a single error while limiting Prairie View A&M to a .051 hitting percentage, including 11 miscues off of the offensive hands of the Panthers.

The Lady Broncs took a 2-0 advantage over the Panthers with a 30-25 victory in the second game before winning the third and final match by a score of 30-19 where UTPA recorded a .225 hitting percentage compared to .049 by the Panthers.

Kellie Phillips (Chandler, AZ/Corona del Sol H.S.) notched a match-high 13 kills to go along with a .343 hitting percentage while Deanna Schneyer (Diamond Bar, CA/Diamond Ranch H.S.) collected 11 kills, three blocks and a .381 hitting percentage.

Danielle Reed (League City, TX/Clear Creek H.S.) played stellar in the middle as the UTPA newcomer notched nine kills in 14 total attacks with a .571 hitting percentage, and Chelsea Blakely (Houston, TX/J. Frank Dobie H.S.) continued to inch her way to the all-time assists' record with 23 assists in the match.

UTPA 3, Air Force Academy 2 (30-23, 30-25, 28-30, 26-30, 15-7)
The Lady Broncs notched one of the biggest wins of the season in the second match of the day with a five-set victory over the Air Force Academy, which was the first time in program history that UTPA has collected a victory over a United States Military Academy.

"This was a hard-fought victory," said head women's volleyball coach Angela Hubbard. "We showed a lot of improvement in this match, and I hope that it's a turnaround in our season. I'm very proud of our team."

The Lady Broncs took a quick 2-0 advantage over the Falcons after notching victories of 30-23 and 30-25, but the Falcons were able to even up the score at 2-2 with triumphs of 30-28 and 30-26 in the third and fourth matches.

In the fifth and decisive frame, the Lady Broncs were able to pull away with a 15-7 victory to earn their first five-set decision of the season.

Phillips continued her strong play as she led the Lady Broncs with a team-high 15 kills and eight digs while Schneyer chipped in with 14 kills, 2.0 blocks and a .333 hitting percentage.

Marci Logan (Centennial, CO/Arapahoe H.S.) put forth a solid offensive performance with a 13-kill match while Blakely dished out 22 kills, and Rebecca Toddy (McAllen, TX/McAllen Memorial H.S.) collected a career-high 30 digs in the match for the Lady Broncs.

The Lady Broncs will be back in action on Saturday (Sept. 15) with a morning match-up against Texas Southern followed by their tournament finale against UTSA at 3:30 p.m.
