Lady Broncs Claim PVAMU Tournament Title; Blakely Claims Program Record

The University of Texas-Pan American made another huge stride in the Angela Hubbard era as the Lady Broncs recorded a perfect 4-0 record at the Prairie View A&M Tournament en route to securing the tournament title.

UTPA junior Chelsea Blakely (Houston, TX/J. Franke Dobie H.S.) became the program's all-time leader in career assists as she dished out her 2,493rd career assists in the first match of the afternoon against the Tigers. It took the Lady Broncs' setter only 232 career games to break the decade-old record held by Marie Velasquez. In addition to her record-breaking performance, Blakely was also selected to the Prairie View A&M All-Tournament Team.

UTPA 3, Texas Southern 0 (30-18, 30-21, 30-12)
In the first match of the afternoon, Blakely led the Lady Broncs to a straight-set victory over Texas Southern - a member of the Southwestern Athletic Conference - as the UTPA junior recorded her record-breaking assists' mark in addition to 45 assists in the match.

The Lady Broncs defeated the Tigers in three sets by scores of 30-21, 30-18 and 30-11, which was highlighted by the performance of UTPA middle blocker Deanna Schneyer (Diamond Bar, CA/Diamond Ranch H.S.). The UTPA junior, who was selected as the Most Valuable Player of the PVAMU Tournament, recorded a match-high 14 kills to go along with a .591 hitting percentage with one error in 22 total attacks.

Kellie Phillips (Chandler, AZ/Corona del Sol H.S.) recorded her fifth double-double of the season with an 11-kill, 10-dig performance to go along with a .360 hitting percentage with two miscues in 25 total offensive attacks.

Danielle Reed (League City, TX/Clear Creek H.S.) collected 10 kills to go along with a .421 hitting percentage while Rebecca Toddy (McAllen, TX/McAllen Memorial H.S.), who was selected as the Libero of the Tournament, rallied in a match-high 13 digs for the Lady Broncs.

In the match, the Lady Broncs recorded a .333 hitting percentage with 52 kills in 111 total attacks and held advantages over the Tigers in kills (52-25), total attacks (111-98), assists (49-14), service aces (9-4) and digs (40-35).

UTPA 3, University of Texas at San Antonio 2 (31-29, 25-30, 30-25, 25-30, 15-11)
The UTPA women's volleyball program collected a milestone victory against the Roadrunners as it was the first time in 27 tries that the Valley's team got the better of their counterparts from San Antonio, TX.

The Lady Broncs and Roadrunners traded game victories in the match with UTPA capturing the first, third and fifth sets and UTSA earning triumphs in the second and fourth frames.

Phillips led the Lady Broncs offensively with 22 kills to go along with nine digs while Schneyer finished with a .500 hitting percentage with 13 kills and two miscues in 22 total attacks to go along with six blocks, including four block solos in the contest.

Blakley dished out 54 assists to go along with nine digs while Noelle Mayor (Missouri City, TX/Dulles H.S.) collected 12 kills and nine digs. Toddy collected 22 digs in the match to lead all defensive standouts.

The Lady Broncs improved their overall record to 6-10 on the season and extended their winning streak to four matches.

The Lady Broncs will be back in action on Wednesday (Sept. 19) when UTPA travels to Huntsville, TX, for a match against Sam Houston State. Match time is slated for 7:00 p.m.
