The University of Texas-Pan American women's volleyball program snapped its four-match winning streak with a 3-1 setback to Sam Houston State on Wednesday (Sept. 19) evening in Huntsville, TX.
The Bearkats came out in fine fashion in the opening frame as the home squad quickly disposed of the Lady Broncs by a 30-10 count after holding the Valley's program to a season-low three kills in that set.
The Lady Broncs came back in the second game to even the score at 1-1 after handing the Bearkats a 30-15 then Sam Houston State was able to record the victory with a 30-16 triumph in the third set followed by a 30-26 triumph in the fourth and final frame.
Cynthia Yarotsky notched one of her best all-around matches as the SHSU outside hitter collected 21 kills to go along with 20 digs while Megan Kuehler dished out 45 assists and notched nine digs.
Chelsea Blakely (Houston, TX/J. Frank Dobie H.S.) recorded her fourth double-double of the season with a 31-assist, 14-dig performance while UTPA newcomer Danielle Reed (League City, TX/Clear Creek H.S.) notched a career-high with 11.0 total blocks in the match, including 10 block assists in the contest. That tally was the third highest in program history for the UTPA newcomer.
Kellie Phillips (Chandler, AZ/Corona del Sol H.S.) finished with seven kills and a career-high six blocks while Noelle Mayor (Missouri City, TX/Dulles H.S.) added eight kills and five blocks.
The Bearkats improved their overall record to 5-6 while the Lady Broncs dropped to 6-11 on the 2007 campaign.
The Lady Broncs will be back in action on Saturday (Sept. 22) when the Valley's program travels to Chicago, IL, for a 2:00 p.m. match-up against Chicago State.
