UTPA Captures 3-1 Road Victory over Chicago State

The University of Texas-Pan American women's volleyball program returned to its winning ways with a 3-1 victory over fellow Independent-foe Chicago State on Saturday afternoon in Chicago, IL.

The Lady Broncs improved their overall record to 7-11 on the 2007 campaign, surpassing their win-total of six matches from a season ago, and captured five of their last six matches.

The Valley's program took an early 1-0 advantage over the Cougars with a 30-27 triumph before taking the second set by a score of 30-28. Chicago State captured the third set by a score of 30-21, but the Lady Broncs came on strong in the fourth frame to take a 30-27 triumph en route to capturing the road victory.

Deanna Schneyer (Diamond Bar, CA/Diamond Ranch H.S.) led the Lady Broncs with a match-high 16 kills to go along with a .387 hitting percentage while Noelle Mayor (Missouri City, TX/Dulles H.S.) collected her first career double-double with a 10-kill, 12-dig performance for the Valley's team.

Chelsea Blakely (Houston, TX/J. Franke Dobie H.S.) quarterbacked the Lady Broncs' offense as the UTPA junior dished out 52 assists to go along with 10 digs en route to recording her fifth double-double of the season. Marci Logan (Centennial, CO/Arapahoe H.S.) also had a standout performance with 14 kills while Rebecca Toddy (McAllen, TX/McAllen Memorial H.S.) notched a match-high 15 digs.

The Lady Broncs held advantages over the Cougars in kills (59-54), total attacks (163-160), assists (58-51) and digs (70-65).

The Lady Broncs will be back in action on Tuesday (Sept. 25) against Stephen F. Austin in Nacogdoches, TX, with match time slated for 7:00 p.m.
