The University of Texas-Pan American women's volleyball team dropped a pair of matches at the Islander Holiday Inn Invitational in Saturday afternoon in Corpus Christi, TX, to fall to 2-10 overall during the 2007 campaign.
San Diego State 3, UTPA 0 (30-16, 30-16, 30-25)
The Lady Broncs dropped a straight-set decision to Mountain West Conference-opponent San Diego State in the first match of the afternoon at the Islander Holiday Inn Invitational.
The Aztecs came out firing on all cylinders in the first set of the match as San Diego State collected a .333 hitting percentage with 19 kills in 45 total attacks while the defense limited UTPA to a -.041 hitting percentage with eight errors and six kills.
San Diego State came back to capture the second game with an identical 30-16 count as the Aztecs notched a .297 hitting attack with 15 kills and four errors in 37 total attacks while UTPA recorded identical 11 kills and 11 errors to fall into a 2-0 hole.
In the third game, the Aztecs concluded their sixth win of the season with a 30-25 victory to secure the triumph.
Stephanie Darnall paced the Aztecs with a double-double with a 10-kill, 12-dig performance while Leah Lathrop also collected a double-double with 22 assists and 10 digs.
Aime Cordiero finished with a match-high 20 digs while Lauren Salisbury and Lindsey Mahan notched nine kills apiece for the San Diego State offense.
Kellie Phillips (Chandler, AZ/Corona del sol H.S.) led the Lady Broncs offensively as the UTPA junior collected eight kills to go along with 10 digs while Chelsea Blakely (Houston, TX/J. Frank Dobie H.S.) continued her march to the top of the record books with 19 assists to propel the Valley's squad.
Deanna Schneyer (Diamond Bar, CA/Diamond Ranch H.S.) finished with six kills while Noelle Mayor (Missouri City, TX/Dulles H.S.) aided the Lady Broncs with five kills and 11 digs.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 3, UTPA 2 (27-30, 30-23, 30-19, 23-30, 15-7)
The Lady Broncs dropped a heartbreaker in the tournament finale as the Valley's squad suffered a five-set decision to the host-program Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
The Lady Broncs were able to take a 1-0 advantage with a 30-27 victory in the opening frame, but quickly fell behind by a 2-1 count after dropping decisions of 30-23 and 30-19 to the Islanders. After evening the score at 2-2 with a 30-23 victory in the fourth frame, the Islanders were able to secure the triumph with a 15-7 in the fifth and decisive set.
Phillips led the Lady Broncs offensively as the UTPA outside hitter collected a double-double with 18 kills and 14 assists while Schneyer collected 12 kills for the Valley's program.
Blakely dished out a team-high 39 assists to go along with 17 digs while Danielle Reed collected eight kills, six assists and 15 digs for the Lady Broncs. Marci Logan (Centennial, CO/Arapahoe H.S.) collected 10 kills for the Lady Broncs while Jordan Davila (Houston, TX/Mayde Creek H.S.) collected 16 digs in the contest.
Jordan Wagner led the Islanders with 27 kills while Lauren Paslay notched 20 kills, and Islander setter Molly McCabe dished out 66 assists for Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
The Lady Broncs will be back in action on Friday (Sept. 14) when UTPA travels to Prairie View, TX, for four matches at the Prairie View A&M Tournament.
