The University of Texas-Pan American women's basketball program defeated the Lady Falcons of Air Force, 53-41 this Wednesday (Nov. 26) at the UTPA Fieldhouse.
"The first half was the best 20 minutes we've played on both sides of the ball. We settled for too many outside shots and when we didn't fall we got a little tight. The fact that we remained so disciplined within our offense to only have two turnovers in the second half," said head women's basketball coach DeAnn Craft.
The Lady Broncs started things off with a 15-0 run on the Lady Falcons but a two from Raimee Beck put the Lady Falcons on the board at the 9:58 mark. The Lady Broncs continued with their double-digit lead throughout the remaining half and held a 23-point lead over the Lady Falcons at the half by a score of 35-12.
At the half, Teshay Winfrey led the team in double-figures with 10 points along with nine rebounds.
Air Force started things off in the second half with a three from Kim Kreke to make the score 35-15 with 19:39 on the clock. The Lady Falcons turned the heat up as they went on a 7-0 run to come within 10 of the Lady Broncs at the 13:02 mark to make the score 40-30.
The Lady Broncs answered back as they widened their lead to 14 after Maria Ben Erlingsdottir shot for two to make the score 46-32 with 9:56 left to play. The Lady Falcons left UTPA silent as they went on an 8-1 run to bring themselves to a six-point deficit with 3:11 left to play.
Air Force could not hold down UTPA as they the Lady Falcons fouled four times taking Maria Ben Erlingsdottir and Teshay Winfrey to the line accounting for UTPA's last four points.
"This was a huge win for us especially over a Mountain West team. Teshay Winfrey - she's just stepping it up and she's just showing a complete complexity of her skill level. Not just in scoring, but in the rebounds, the assists, the steals and in 38 minutes of play and no turnovers," added Craft.
Teshay Winfrey and Maria Ben Erlingsdottir were the only Lady Broncs to finish in double-digits as they both finished with 17 points. Winfrey finished with a double-double as she also collected 14 boards along with four assists and three steals. Erlingdottir added four rebounds and two steals.
Freshman Brittany Demery finished the night with eight points on 4-of-7 shooting from the field in 25 minutes of action.
Brooke Cultra led the way for the Lady Falcons as she finished in double-figures with 16 points on 7-of-14 shooting from the field along with three boards and two assists.
The Lady Broncs hit the road after the Thanksgiving holidays as they travel to Pennsylvania as they face Lafayette College on Nov. 29 with game-time slated for 1:00 CT.
