The University of Texas-Pan American women's basketball team remains undefeated on their home court as they were back in action on Saturday, Dec. 20 against Schreiner University where they defeated the Lady Mountaineers, 73-36.
"It's difficult this time of the year because they (Lady Broncs) are trying to get to their families and yet we had a lot we wanted to get accomplished tonight," said sixth-year head coach DeAnn Craft.
The Lady Broncs, who led the entire game, came out of the gate and never looked back shooting 41 percent from the field for the match.
In the first half, the Lady Mountaineers struggled as the Lady Broncs led by as many as 15 going into the half.
Teshay Winfrey scored 16 points to go along with seven rebounds and four assists. Rose Esther Jean finished the game with 12 points, two assists and four steals.
In the second half it was no different as the Lady Broncs led by as many as 37 points. The Lady Mountaineers shot 39 percent from the field for the match but the Lady Broncs were to hot to handle.
This win brings the Lady Brocns to 7-5 on the season, which is the best record any Lady Bronc team has had up to this point in their respective campaigns.
"There's no other team in the history of the program that has been above .500 at this point," said Craft. "That's monumental for where we want this program to go and to be the first is something exciting and we hope that it will carry forward into the spring semester."
The Lady Broncs are back in action on Sunday, Dec. 28 and Monday, Dec. 29 as they host the fourth annual Battle at the Border at the UTPA Fieldhouse with their first match scheduled against Albany at 5 p.m.
"We're the defending champions and we're going to be playing Albany out of the American East (Conference)," Craft concluded. "It's a wonderful event and it allows people from the Valley who follow women's basketball to see different styles of play and some extremely good individual players from each team."
