Men's Tennis Falls to 65th Ranked SMU

The University of Texas men's tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision to 65th Southern Methodist University on Sunday (Mar. 9) at the Bent Tree Country Club in Dallas, TX.

With the setback the Broncs fell to 5-7 on the season and 1-2 in conference play. This season alone, the Broncs have played five nationally-ranked opponents.

The Broncs went head-to-head with two nationally-ranked competitors on Southern Methodist University's roster.

The Broncs will have a final opportunity to upset a nationally-ranked program when they take on 58th ranked Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on April 3 at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.

In doubles' action, Ivan Avila and Andrew Irving suffered a 8-2 setback against Alex Skrypko and Robin Fahgen in the top flight while Brett Bernstein and Ashwin Vijayaragavan fell 8-6 against David Kuczer and Adham el-effendi in the second flight.

Nirvick Mohinta and Marcus Dornauf were handed an 8-2 setback by Olvind Alver and Chris Hooshyar in the number-three lineup spot.

The Broncs dropped five of the six singles' matches with sophomore Bernstein collecting the only of the day.

Avila suffered a 6-0, 6-4 setback against 117th ranked Kuczer in the number-one singles' spot while Vijayaragavan dropped a 6-1, 6-2 decision to 62nd ranked Fahgen in the second flight.

Mohinta lost his match to Skrypko by scores of 6-0, 6-0 in the number-three spot of the rotation while Irving was handed a 6-4, 6-3 setback against Hooshyar.

Collecting the lone victory for the Broncs was Bernstein who handed Taylor St. Eve a 7-5, 6-1 setback in the number-five spot while Dornauf suffered a 6-3, 6-3 decision to el-Effendi in the sixth flight.

The Broncs will take a break from traveling and will prepare to host four teams to the Orville Cox Tennis Center. Oral Roberts will be on the UTPA courts on Saturday (Mar. 15).
