Second year head coach
Tom Schuberth was selected as the 2007-08 NCAA Division I Independent Coach of the Year and guided six of his athletes to the All-Independent team, which released on Monday (Mar. 10).
Senior guard Paul Stoll (Lansing, MI/Lansing C.C.), Zach Trader (LaPorte, TX/LaPorte H.S.), Nathan Hawkins (San Antonio, TX/Moberly Area Community College), Brian Burrell (Nacogdoches, TX/Paris J.C.), Dexter Shankle (Katy TX/James E. Taylor H.S.), and Emmanuel Jones (Washington, DC/Riverside City College) represented The University of Texas-Pan American on the All-Independent Men's Basketball Team.
Schuberth led UTPA to an 18-13 record while going 7-1 against Independent opponents. Schuberth led the Broncs to their first winning season since the 2001-02 season. Of its 31 games, UTPA played 21 on the road, winning 10. The Broncs won 11 of their last 14 contests and finished five games above .500.
Stoll was cited as a first-team All-Independent selection as he led the Broncs to 18 victories. The floor general finished his senior season averaging a team-high 14.2 points and 7.2 assists per game.
Stoll connected on 48.6 percent (108-of-222) of his attempts from the field, 47.5 percent (86-of-181) of his three-point goal tries and 85.1 percent (137-of-161) of his shots from the charity stripe. Stoll collected 10 or more points in 20 of 31 games and scored 20 or more points on seven occasions while leading the program in scoring in 11 of 31 games.
As the all-around captain, Stoll picked up 224 helpers (second in the nation), an average of 7.2 per game (third in the nation). Stoll was featured on ESPN-Around the Rim, was cited as Independent Player of the Week, selected as the 12th Mid-Majority Baller of the Week and collected All-Tournament Team honors on two occasions.
Trader - a senior forward - was selected as a second team All-Independent team award recipient. The UTPA senior finished second on the team averaging 13.9 points per game to go with a team-high and career-high 5.9 rebounds per game.
Trader connected on 51.1 percent (170-of-333) of his total attempts from the field, 75.4 percent (92-of-122) of his shots from the charity stripe and was listed in the top 10 among all NCAA Division I Independent players in total rebounds and rebounds per game.
Trader recorded six double-doubles (points-rebounds) this past season and finished with 10 or more points in 25 of 31 games while leading the Broncs in the scoring department on eight occasions.
Hawkins - a product of San Antonio, Texas, - represented the All-Newcomer Team where he finished fourth on the team in scoring, averaging 10.6 points per game and fourth in rebounding with 3.9 per game. Hawkins was second on the team in field goal percentage connecting on 52.5 percent (116-of-221) of his attempts.
The UTPA forward finished with 10 or more points in 16 of 31 contests and was selected to the Las Vegas Holiday Classic All-Tournament Team.
Burrell, Shankle and Jones collected honorable mention accolades in the 2007-08 campaign.
Burrell finished his senior season averaging 13.6 points while picking up 5.4 rebounds per game. The Broncs guard was selected to the Montana State Bobcat Gran Tree Inn Classic All-Tournament Team, which was hosted by Montana State.
Shankle ended his Bronc career averaging 7.0 points and 1.6 assists per game. Shankle led the Broncs offensively with a 47.8 mark (43-of-90) from behind the arc. Shankle finished the last game of the season with a game-high 20 points in a 78-68 victory over Savannah State.
Jones made an immediate impact in the Broncs lineup despite missing part of the season due to illness. In his first season in a Bronc uniform, Jones averaged 9.3 points while bringing down 4.2 rebounds per game.
Jones closed out the season collecting 14 points to go with seven rebounds and two block shots against Savannah State.
Utah Valley's Ryan Toolson took top honors as he was named Independent Player of the Year while Jordan Brady of Utah Valley was selected as Defensive Player of the Year. Al'Lonzo Coleman of Presbyterian College was honored as Independent Newcomer of the Year.
The 2007-08 NCAA Division I All-Independent Men's Basketball Team was selected by Sports Information Directors and head coaches at NCAA Division I Independent institutions.
