Broncs Post 1-1 Record in Day One Over PVAM

Game One

The University of Texas-Pan American baseball team dropped a 5-2 decision to Prairie View A&M this afternoon at the Edinburg Baseball Stadium.

With the setback, the Broncs fell to 12-25 overall while the Panthers improved to 18-19 on the season.

The Panthers jumped on the Broncs in the first inning collecting a run when Bronc hurler Evan Cunningham issued a walk to W. White who later scored on a double to left field by B. Whitby, to make the score 1-0.

In the bottom of the second, the Broncs tied the game at one when Jordan Rutenbar led the inning off with a walk, advanced to second on a single by Bonham Hough and scored on a fielder's choice by Jose Mendoza.

The Panthers led the third inning with back-to-back singles to left field and loaded the bases when Whitby reached on a walk. A single by B Kendricks plated White from third and M. Richards scored on a double play by O. Davis, to make the score 3-1 in favor of PVAM.

After a scoreless top half inning for the Panthers, the Broncs plated a run in the fourth when Nick Spears doubled to left field, scoring Hough from second base who reached on a walk, to make the score 3-2.

Two final runs for the Panthers in the fifth would silence the Broncs in the seven inning ball game and gave them their 18th win of the season.

Collecting the only two hits for the Broncs were Hough and Spears who both finished with a one hit apiece.

Cunningham took the loss for the Broncs, falling to 1-2 on the season. The Bronc hurler pitched 4.2 innings, allowing eight hits, five runs - all earned while striking out three.

PVAM was led offensively by G. Ford who went a perfect 3-for-3 with two RBI's while Kendricks went 2-for-3 to go with one RBI and one run scored.

Game Two

The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs picked up the win against the Panthers of Prairie View A&M Saturday night (Apr. 19) at Edinburg Baseball Stadium with a 8-3 victory.

The Broncs were off to an early start putting two runs on the board in the bottom of the second. With a hit down the middle, Bonham Hough collected the RBI bringing in catcher Nick Spears. Ruben Shives scored late in the second with a hit to right field by Roly Gonzalez.

The Panthers were held scoreless in the top of the third but gave up a run in the bottom of the third with a double to center field by Ruben Shives bringing in Jordan Rutenbar.

Prairie View would score in the top of the fourth but would hold the Broncs to no runs in the bottom of the fourth.

The Broncs would begin the bottom of the fifth with a bang with a homerun to left field by Jordan Rutenbar. Ruben Shives would bring in the second run of the fifth with a single to left field bringing in Jose Mendoza.

The Broncs would hold the Panthers to another scoreless inning but would bring in two of their own in the bottom of the sixth. With a double down the left field line by Jose Mendoza, Ryan Vest would bring in the run. Jordan Rutenbar would bring in the second run on a wild pitch by Charlie Aceto.

The seventh inning would be a quiet one for both teams but the Broncs would break the silence in the bottom of the eighth with one last run for the night. Jose Mendoza would score on a double down the right field line by Andrew Perez.

Cody Cisper would pick up the win for the Broncs and would collect a career-high of nine strikeouts. The win brings Cisper to 3-6 for the season.

Jose Mendoza would finish the night going 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI and fellow teammate Ruben Shives would finish 2-for-2 with a run and two RBI's.

The Broncs will be back in action tomorrow at noon where they will play game the final game of the two days series with the Panthers at the Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
