The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs dropped an 11-10 decision in 11 innings to Stephen F. Austin on Monday (Apr. 28) in Nacogdoches, TX.
A walk-off homerun in the bottom of the 11th by Mat Whatley sealed the win for the Lumberjacks Monday night.
With the setback, the Broncs fell to 17-28 on the season while the Lumberjacks improved to 17-27 overall.
Ke Crabtree opened the first with a double to left field and crossed home plate following an error by the Broncs third baseman, to make the score 1-0.
The Broncs grabbed a run in the second frame on two hits when Jose Mendoza singled to center field and advanced to third on a double to left field by Nick Spears. Mendoza tied the game at 1-1 following a wild pitch by SFA's pitcher Kyle Watson.
The Lumberjacks were held scoreless in the bottom half of the inning which gave the Broncs an opportunity to collected seven runs in the top of the third on seven hits.
Roly Gonzalez led off with a single to left field, moved to third on a Bonham Hough single to right field and scored following a single to the pitcher by Billy Donaho. Hough came around to score when Ryan Vest reached on a throwing error by the third baseman.
After a pitching change for the Lumberjacks, Donaho scored on a wild pitch by pitcher T. Harrelson. Andrew Perez and Jeremy Johnson kept the fame alive with a back-to-back singles plating Vest and Mendoza. In his second at-bat in the inning, Donaho singled, scoring Johnson and Perez, making the score 8-1.
Stephen F. Austin collected a run in the bottom half of the inning on two hits. Noe Trevino doubled down the left field line, advanced to third following a single by Crabtree and scored on a sacrifice fly to center field, to make the score 8-2.
The Lumberjacks recorded eight runs in the next five innings of the game but were held scoreless in the bottom of the ninth.
With the Broncs down 10-8 heading into the top of the ninth, they were able to produce two runs on one hit. Jordan Rutenbar got on base with a walk, was substituted out with pinch runner J.C. Cortez who advanced to second on a wild pitch and moved to third when Mendoza was hit by a pitch. Spears was issued a walk, loading the bases for newcomer Perez who doubled down the left field line scoring Cortez and Mendoza, tying the game at 10-10 and sending the game into extra innings.
Both teams were held scoreless in the 10th but the Lumberjacks pulled away with the victory following a solo homerun in the 11th, taking game one 11-10.
Perez led the Broncs offensively going 2-for-6 with three RBI's and one run scored while five other Broncs finished with multi-hit performances.
Broncs hurler Shane Janecka recorded the loss, pitching 5.2 innings, allowing 10 hits, seven runs - five earned while only walking two batters.
The Broncs will finish the series against the Lumberjacks this afternoon at 1 p.m. at Jaycees Field in Nacogdoches, TX.
