Broncs Drop Double-Header to TAMUCC

The University of Texas-Pan American baseball team dropped a double-header to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Tuesday (Apr. 8) at the Chapman Field in Corpus Christi, TX.

With the setback, the Broncs fell to 9-22 on the season and have now dropped their eighth straight game.

The Islanders quickly led a charge on the Broncs collecting seven runs in the first two innings including a three-run homerun to center field in the bottom second by Trey Hernandez.

The Broncs recorded a run in the second when Gabriel Salinas led off with a walk and advanced to second on a single to right center by Andrew Perez. A fielder's choice by Roly Gonzalez plated Salinas, to make 3-1.

TAMUCC continued the hitting rally in the bottom fourth, as Broncs hurler Phillip Rodriguez gave up two doubles and a triple, making the score 11-1.

UTPA added a run in fifth inning when Salinas doubled to left center and scored on a triple by Perez, to cut the deficit to 11-2.

The Islanders plated a run in the sixth and seventh innings to extend their lead 13-2.

The Broncs started a surge in the final two innings scoring a run in the eighth on two hits. Ryan Vest singled to center field, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored when Gonzalez singled to center field, to make the score 13-3.

In the final inning, the Broncs battled from behind to record three runs on three hits but it wasn't enough, as the Islanders captured game one 13-6.

Rodriguez took the loss for the Broncs, pitching 2.0 innings, giving up four hits, allowing seven runs - all earned and dropping his overall record to 0-4.

The Broncs were led offensively by Johnson who went 3-for-5 to go with two RBI'S while Perez went 2-for-5 with one RBI.

Game Two

Back-to-back runs in six innings cost the Broncs game two against the Islanders as they fell 6-4.

The Broncs recorded a run in third and three in the fifth but were held scoreless in the final four innings.

Broncs hurler Doug Roth took the loss for the Broncs, pitching 4.0 innings, allowing four hits and four runs - all earned.

Three Broncs recorded multi-hit performances including Jordan Rutenbar who went 3-for-5 to go with one RBI and Johnson who finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

The Broncs will be back in action on Friday (Apr. 11) when they face-off against Texas Southern in a three game series in Houston, TX with game time slated for 3 p.m.
