Broncs Drop 8-5 Decision to TCU in Final Regular Season Game

May 12, 2008

The Broncs held a 5-0 advantage heading into the bottom of the sixth but it wasn't enough to hold off the Horned Frogs from posting a 8-5 win on Monday afternoon at the Lupton Stadium in Fort Worth, TX.

The Broncs concluded the regular season with an 18-34 overall record while TCU improved their win streak to seven games and finished the season with a 36-16 record.

Bonham Hough led the Broncs finishing 1-for-3 with two RBI's and two runs scored while Ryan Vest went 1-for-5 with two RBI's.

The Broncs got the bats going early, collecting two runs on two hits in the first frame. With two runners on the diamond, a Vest double down the right field line plated Hough and Billy Donaho who both walked earlier in the inning, making the score 2-0.

UTPA collected a run in the top of the third when Hough was issued a walk and later scored following a Donaho double down the left field line, to make the score 3-0.

The Broncs defense was solid through five innings till the Horned Frogs plated six runs on four hits in the sixth frame.

Clint Arnold led off the inning with a single to left field, advanced to second when Matt Carpenter got on base with a walk and moved to third following a Chris Ellington single to third base. With the bases loaded, Steve Ellington was issued a walk, scoring Arnold from third. Bryan Holaday continued the rally with a single to left field driving in Carpenter with no outs in the frame.

Cunningham came into the game for Cody Cisper and issued a walk to his first batter in Hunt Woodruff, scoring Ellington. With the bases loaded, Cunningham hit Matt Vern with a pitch, bringing in the Horned Frogs fourth run of the game. TCU grabbed two more runs on a double down the left field line by Ben Carruthers, to take a 6-5 advantage.

The Broncs were silenced in the final three innings of the game, as the Horned Frogs collected a single run in the seventh and in the eighth, recording their seventh straight victory of the season.

The Broncs will have a week to rest and prepare to host six teams in the National Independent Tournament beginning on Wednesday (May 21) at the Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
