Broncs Drop 14-4 Decision to HBU

The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs dropped its first game in the National Independent Tournament against Houston Baptist Saturday night with a 14-4 loss.

The Broncs had a rough start giving up six runs in the top of the first. Greg Gossett was to put the first run on the board for the Huskies on a single to left field by Richard Orange. Orange, Andrew Taccolini, Eric Schiro, Leo Delgado, and Ryan Majewski would all follow with runs in the first giving the Huskies the 6-0 lead.

The Broncs would answer back with three runs on two hits in the bottom of the first. Jose Mendoza would double to left field and record three RBI's bringing in Jordan Rutenbar, Billy Donaho and Bonham Hough making the score 6-3.

The next two innings would be quiet for both teams but with two pitching changes in the top of the fourth from the Broncs, the Huskies would put four more runs on the board. Shane Cox was to be put in for David De Leon and would face six batters giving up one hit and two runs. Doug Roth was to finish the top of the fourth facing two batters in that inning.

The Huskies were to put two more runs on the board in the top of the fifth but held the Broncs to one run in the bottom of the fifth, which would be the final run for the Broncs. Jordan Rutenbar scored on a double to left field by Ruben Shives.

The Broncs would not be able to hold the Huskies back and would give up two more runs in the final inning of play making the final score 14-4. The loss brings the Broncs to a 20-35 overall record for the season.

Starting pitcher Shane Janecka would be charged with the loss pitching a third of an inning giving up six runs on seven hits. The loss brings him to a 2-7 overall record for the season.

The Broncs wrap-up their final game of the season and the National Independent Tournament tomorrow afternoon when they face Le Moyne College at 6:00 p.m. at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
