The University of Texas-Pan American men's tennis program dropped a 5-2 decision to No. 13 Tulsa this Friday afternoon (Jan. 23) at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, OK.
The Broncs notched wins in the top-two spots of the rotation with No. 60 Aswin Vijayaragavan defeating Victor Kolik 1-6, 6-2, 7-6 (4) in the number-one spot of the rotation and Nirvick Mohinta defeating Marko Ballok 7-6 (4), 2-6, 1-0 (9) in the number-two spot.
UTPA struggled in the remaining spots as Tulsa's Ashley Watling defeated Andrew Irving 6-1, 6-0 in the number-three spot. Freshman Beau Bernstein was defeated by Ross Cunningham 7-6 (2), 7-6 (4) in the number-four spot of the lineup.
In the number-five spot of the rotation, Shashank Vij was defeated by James Seagraves 6-2, 6-0 while teammate Abdelhamid Riani was defeated 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 in the last spot of the rotation.
The Broncs struggled in doubles as they dropped all three matches to Tulsa.
In number-one doubles, Mohinta and Vijayaragavan were defeated by Ross Cunningham and Victor Kolik 8-2 while Beau Bernstein and Irving were defeated 8-2 in number-two doubles by Alberto Sottocorno and Ashley Watling. Riani and Vij were defeated 8-4 by Patrick Collins and Rusty Turpin in the number-three spot.
The loss brings the Broncs to 1-1 on the season.
The men will be back in action tomorrow afternoon as they face No. 71 Oklahoma at the Quail Creek Golf and Country Club tennis complex in Oklahoma City with match time slated for 2:00 p.m. CT.
