The University of Texas-Pan American women's basketball program dropped its first road game of the New Year to #21 Oklahoma State as the Cowgirls defeated the Lady Broncs 85-36 this Saturday (Jan. 3) night at the Gallagher-Iba Arena in Stillwater, OK. The Lady Broncs dropped to 8-8 on the season, while the Cowgirls are 10-2 for the season.
The Cowgirls were too much for the Lady Broncs to handle as UTPA was held back to 33.3 percent (8-24) shooting in the first half. The Lady Broncs held their only lead of the game with 16:51 on the clock after OSU's Shyvon Spears committed a shooting foul on Aleeya Grigsby to give the Lady Broncs a one-point lead. Grigsby's one free throw gave the Lady Broncs a two-point lead, but wouldn't be enough as the Cowgirls regained their lead on a three-point shot by Taylor Hardeman.
The Lady Broncs would shoot 27.1 percent (13-48) from the field for the game along with 30 percent (6-20) from beyond the arc and 80 percent (4-5) from the charity stripe.
Epiphany Smith recorded a game-high 15 points on 5-of-11 shooting from the field and 5-of-9 from three-point range along with two assists.
UTPA had only four other Lady Broncs finish the night with points in Grigsby with six points and eight rebounds, Teshay Winfrey with another six points along with three rebounds, two assists and one steal, Rose Esther Jean with six points, eight rebounds, three assists and two steals and Brittany Demery adding another three points and one steal.
The Lady Broncs will take a week break before heading back to the UTPA Fieldhouse as they face Utah Valley on Jan. 10 with tip-off slated for 7:00 p.m. CT.
