Broncs Drop First Home Game to Texas-Arlington

Jan. 8, 2009

The University of Texas-Pan American men's basketball program was handed a 76-51 setback by the Texas-Arlington Mavericks on Wednesday (Jan. 7) night at the UTPA Fieldhouse to put the Broncs at 5-10 on the season.

"Texas-Arlington outplayed us tonight, but we did try and claw back into it but we just couldn't make a big play," said head men's basketball coach Tom Schuberth. "It's never fun to lose at home in the manner that we did but if you turn it around and use it as a positive and learn from it, then it can help you down the road."

The Broncs had a rough start as they never held a lead throughout the contest. The Broncs clawed their way back to come within two on two different occasions in the first half, but with 37 seconds on the clock, the Mavericks went for two to extend their lead to nine on the Broncs with a score of 36-27 to enter the half.

By the second half, Texas-Arlington extended their lead to double digits and never looked back. The Broncs shot 39.1 percent (18-46) for the game but wasn't enough to keep them undefeated at the UTPA Fieldhouse.

Emmanuel Jones and Nick Weiermiller were the only Broncs to score double-figures with Jones scoring 13 points along with seven rebounds and Weiermiller scoring 12 points, five rebounds and seven assists.

Jason Jensen had another stellar night under his belt with a season-high eight points and two steals along with two rebounds and two assists.

The Broncs hit the road once again as the next three scheduled games are on the road as they Broncs face North Carolina Central next on Jan. 14 with a 6:30 p.m. tip-off, UTSA on Jan. 21 and Auburn on Jan. 27.
