Final Stats
The University of Texas-Pan American men's basketball program dropped a 77-72 decision to the Lamar Cardinals this Monday (Nov. 14) afternoon at the Montagne Center in Beaumont, Texas.
The loss puts the Broncs back by two games (0-2) and improves the Cardinals to 2-0 for the season.
After holding a short-lived lead in the first, the Broncs came within one at the 7:08 mark on a layup up Julius Hearn. The Cardinals then extended their lead to 12, but the Broncs were able to score three on a shot by ChaRunn Jones to come within nine just before heading into the half.
The Broncs faced their largest deficit at the 9:44 mark, in the second half, by a score of 60-45. With 30 seconds left on the clock, the Broncs came within two on a free throw shot by Nick Weiermiller, but a foul by Jones would take Kendrick Harris to the line and extended the Cardinals lead to four.
UTPA bounced back with a 3-point shot by Weiermiller to come within one, but a foul by Rakeem Couch drew Reggie Mathis to the line and extended the Cardinals lead once again with 15 seconds left on the clock. With 15 seconds on the clock, the Cardinals took one more trip to the line and the win.
Jared Maree was the top performer for the Broncs with 19 points and nine rebounds along with two steals. Julius Hearn and ChaRunn Jones each scored nine points apiece. Hearn added three rebounds, four assists, and two steals. Jones added two assists and one steal.
Lamar's Kendrick Harris scored a game-high 24 points with two rebounds and two assists.
The Broncs next face Southland Conference-foe Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Thursday, Nov. 19 with tip-off slated for 7:00 p.m.
