Women's Basketball Drops Season Home Opener to Texas Southern

The University of Texas-Pan American women's basketball program suffered a 65-58 setback to Texas Southern this Wednesday (Nov. 18) afternoon at the UTPA Fieldhouse.

The loss brings the Lady Broncs to 0-2 for the season and improves the Tigers to 1-1 for the season.

UTPA entered the half leading by three after taking the final lead of the first on a three point shot by Rachel Hester to make the score 22-19. By the half, Marah Guzman had scored half of her 12 total points. Guzman also finished with three rebounds, three assists, and two steals.

UTPA struggled to hold onto a lead in the second as the half consisted of nine ties and 11 lead changes. The Lady Broncs were unable to bounce back after tying the score at 51 with 4:22 left on the clock. UTPA was only able to come within two after Aleeya Grigsby sank both her free throw shots.

Along with Guzman, three other Lady Broncs finished in double-figures with Rose Esther Jean scoring 11 points and Rachel Hester and Maria Ben Erlingsdottir scoring 10 points apiece.

Jean added five rebounds and one assist; Hester seven assists and one rebound; and Erlingsdottir seven rebounds and one assist.

Texas Southern's top performer was NaDosha Strickland with 16 points, four rebounds, one assist, and one steal. Two other Lady Tigers finished in double-figures with Inisha Daughtry scoring 15 and Jamine Payne with 14.

The Lady Broncs are back in action this coming Sunday (Nov. 22) as they host Long Beach State at the South Padre Island Convention Center. Tip-off is slated for 1:00 p.m.
