Volleyball Suffers 3-0 Loss to Utah Valley

After returning from a two-game road trip, the University of Texas-Pan American women's volleyball team faced the Utah Valley Wolverines at the UTPA Fieldhouse and dropped a 3-0 decision this Friday (Nov. 6) night.

"Utah Valley is a great team and tonight we let them get into our heads. We struggled mentally and I think that is one thing we still need to work on. We did play much better tonight than when we played them the first time," said head women's volleyball coach Angela Hubbard.

"I've seen an improvement in our play over the last three weeks; we are a better and more confident team."

The Lady Broncs started off the match down by one as Utah Valley captured a quick 25-12 win in the first set. UTPA came back in the second set to give the Wolverines a run for their money, but lost their momentum as Utah Valley went on a 7-1 run to make the score 24-23, UTPA. The Lady Broncs were unable to score and dropped a 26-24 set.

In the final set of the match, UTPA started off 6-2, but allowed the Wolverines to take the final lead after the Lady Broncs tied the score at eight on a kill by Jimena Gandara. Utah Valley took the final set with a 25-20 win.

Kaitlin Vasquez recorded a team-high nine kills along with one assist and three digs. Of the 33 total kills by the Lady Broncs, 23 were accredited to Rita Gonzalez. Gonzalez also posted seven kills and nine digs.

Senior Rebecca Toddy recorded a match-high 21 digs, while Sarah Davis added four blocks along with four kills.

Utah Valley's Kayli Broadbent posted a match-high 16 kills along with 12 digs and one block. Chelsea Fa'alogo also collected 33 assists for the Wolverines.

The Lady Broncs take a week off and return play as they host Houston Baptist on Nov. 13 at the UTPA Fieldhouse. The match versus HBU will be the Lady Broncs final home game of the season and will also serve as senior night for the women. Match time is slated for 7:00 p.m.
