Final Stats
Nick Weiermiller's two free throws at the 1:10 mark in the second half put the Broncs (1-13) behind by one, but wasn't enough to give the Broncs a lead as the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks (5-7) slipped by UTPA, 64-59, this Monday (Dec. 28) afternoon at the UTPA Fieldhouse.
Jared Maree was the Broncs leading scorer with 18 points off the bench, all in the second half. Maree has not started the last two contests due to an injury sustained at Texas. Maree also grabbed three rebounds and recorded one assist.
Nick Weiermiller added 14 points along with three assists, one block, one steal, and one rebound. Weiermiller was 7-of-10 from the line and 3-of-7 from the field.
The Broncs went on an 11-2 run, in the second, to come within seven of the Lumberjacks after Northern Arizona had held a 21 point deficit at the 19:49 mark. Matt Mierzycki then fouled NAU's Nick Larson putting the Lumberjacks up by nine, which would also begin the close call for the Broncs.
UTPA was able to come within one of the Lumberjacks on two occasions, but a foul by Luis Valera with 12 seconds on the clock opened up the flood gates for NAU and the 64-59 loss for the Broncs.
Northern Arizona's Cameron Jones scored a game-high 25 points and grabbed six boards and collected two assists. Shane Johannsen added 18 points for the Lumberjacks along with five rebounds.
The Broncs will take a break before heading out to Colorado Springs, CO to open up the New Year on January 2 as they face Air Force at 8:00 p.m. CT.
